I thought I would experiment with my US Highway 1 Sapphire Blue Strat with Rosewood neck since I got it for $325 at GC's once a year sale without a scratch and since most everyone that owns one seems to think they come loaded with the cheapo hardware so they upgrade them. Anyway, the CS 69's made it absolutely sing with the sweetest Jimiesque tones in the world completely reminiscent of ANY song Jimi ever played using a Strat! I read people saying that the bridge position pup sounds weak and that the neck position sounds beautiful. Well, all 3 pups are the same exact specs and to me, in bridge position it sounds just as sweet and exactly like Jimi sounded while playing in bridge position. Not too ice picky and smooth as silk with an almost delay upon pick attack that resonates pure silky smooth '65 - '69 Jimi tone. Positively Beautiful! So...I decided I'm going to put these in my new AM Series White Strat with maple neck and Delta tone system. Guess what? Completely different beautiful mellow tone without the edge! I thought maple was supposed to sound brighter than rosewood. Not so in this case. The rosewood neck Highway 1 has more of a balzy "Hey Joe/Stevie Ray" woody tone and the maple neck Am Series with Delta tone now has an ultra silky smooth Hey Baby/Pali Gap Rainbow bridge tone that you would almost swear they were the vintage noiseless pups. Not because of lack of noise. There's still the 60 cycle hum, but the smooth tonal characteristics are just fabulous, yet it still possesses the full Jimi edge. For playing Voodoo Chile, the rosewood neck Hwy 1 is the right tool and it is best suited for all "Are You Experienced" era songs. This may be partially due to the rosewood neck, the thin lacquer paint job that allows the wood to breathe and resonate (vs. the thickly sealed AM Series Polyurethane) and the vintage style trem bridge with the stamped saddles. The maple neck AM Series Strat is not suited for Voodoo Child, to do the song justice in raw, overdrive mode because of how clean and rounded it sounds. However, for sounds like Jimi's Rainbow Bridge/Uni-Vibe-ish, Star Spangled banner with clean shimmering (not fat) sounds and studio recording, the maple neck AM Series with CS 69's duplicates the tone with almost frightening exactness! The smoother sound on this one may be due in part to the new 2 pivot trem block versus the stamped vintage saddles on the Hwy 1, not sure. Both guitars pups were adjusted to "sweet spot" resonance with approximately the same pickup height. The CS 69's even made my Marshall MG100 DFX solid state amp sound almost exactly like a tube amp! Also, there is no noticeable difference with the AM Series/maple with Delta Tone system. With the Delta Tone control engaged or disengaged, it sounds the same in all 5 positions. Also, I'm not sure if the capacitor values are different in the Hwy 1 vs. Am Series or if that is affecting the difference in tone, but since they are both fairly new, they probably have the same capacitor values (I forgot to check when wiring them up). All I know is, if anyone has any reservations about getting Jimi's tone from the '65 - '68 "Are You Experienced" era, straight on through Woodstock, don't! The CS 69's will get you there in two different ways with unerring accuracy depending on the type of neck you have, bridge type (stamped/2 pivot), paint type, etc.! I know some of you will say that the neck doesn't have all that much to do with the tone, body density, different woods, etc. but if you played these 2 guitars side by side, you would hear two completely different animals and be hard pressed to decide which one to steal! ;-) Sure there's tons of variables and every guitar sounds different but in a general way, I believe what I'm saying is accurate. Maybe that's why Jimi mainly used a rosewood neck through the mid 60s and the maple neck a lot during the Woodstock/Raibow Bridge era? Before, I couldn't decide whether I favored the rosewood neck Hwy 1 or the maple neck AM Series Strat. The Hwy 1 used to sound pretty decent but kind of lack luster in tone and the AM Series pups were too ice picky and harsh sounding. Now with the CS 69's in both of them, I am in love with both of them and need them both for the uniquely different sounds they now produce! Go CS 69's!

Thanks Strongpersuader! Good idea! Check back tomorrow. I'll put up 3 + 3 sound clips. One playing clean with "Hey Joe" intro. The second playing the "Purple Haze" intro with some gain and the third playing "Hey Baby" with some gain on a Ultra Vibe (Uni-Vibe clone)on the Hwy 1 rosewood neck and AM Series maple neck through a Marshall MG100 DFX. I'll let you be the judge! ;-)

The HWY1 comes stock with a .1uf capacitor.
One of the reasons I got a HWY1, I wanted a Strat I could do countless experimental modifications too, with out the slightest guilt or remorse. I’m thinking my next mod will be to try a set of CS69 in it with a blender pot, no load tone pot and a .022uf cap.

edto do you know what capacitor comes stock with the AM Series? That sounds like a good mix without remorse! haha I'm not sure you'd need the blender pot though since all 3 pups are the same specs and even the bridge has a nice smooth neck pup like tone except for some added treble due to it's position. Can't hurt to try though! If I were you, I would leave the stock cap in first to hear how it sounds before swapping it out after installing the CS 69's. What would a .022up cap versus a .1uf cap do anyway?

edto: thanks. So is a .1uf capacitor a higher or lower value than a .022uf? Which of the two causes more treble? Or is it really a .01uf like on the other guitar nuts page about capacitors?

HWY1= .1uf or .100uf with the zeros
AmStrat= .022uf
When guitar nuts website talks about using a .02uf or .01uf cap, he's talking about .020 and .010
Strat .022uf cap and what the Guitar Nuts website calls a .02uf (.020)cap are about the same. .01uf (.010) would be even brighter.
The .1uf cap in a HWY1 is vintage style, which gives a darker tone, but only to the mid and neck pickups, because with vintage wiring, the bridge pickup isn't hooked up to a tone control so it's 'no load' or like a .000 capacitor, which is why the bridge pickup is trebly in a HWY1.
Stock sizes for strats are .1uf vintage from the old days to about 1970, .05uf from 1970 to 1983 and .022 83 onwards, roughly, I’m don’t know exact dates, which would be .100, .050 and .022

Very interesting! So is a .1uf the same as a .01uf or is it 10 times larger or smaller?

edto: That's amazing because my Hwy 1 Strat has always had lots of treble with the stock pups or the CS 69's.
Acase4u: I'll get on it ASAP. Gotta get a work project finished ut will do it soon as I can! :-)

Hi Achase4u,
This is my first crack at recording so I'm not sure I did a good job or not. I just did a Hey Baby type demo. Since this was my first try and it took all day, I'll have to get the rest of the clips up tomorrow or most of them anyway. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Frank :-)
