Wait -- one out of eight of SRV's primary guitars had a masculine name. Calling a guitar by its color is gender neutral and "Main" is gender neutral. "First Wife" and "Lenny (Lenora)" are feminine.

The white guitar, besides being a gift from his good friend Charley, had a "Charley's Guitar Shop" logo on the head (because Charley had it built in his shop for Stevie). It was just natural to call that "the Charley guitar".

spud1950, I have a roland-ready strat that was at least partially MIM in 1999, and has no shielding as far as I can tell. Since I replaced the original neck with a maple one with a flatter radius it's become one of my faves.

yes9310 :
To test ground to strings. Set the meter to ohms. Touch one meter lead to the output jack and the other to the strings. There should be no resistance.

I have a MIM 1997 Deluxe Series Strat. It has shielding paint in the cavities,a wire connecting the paint to ground, and the pickguard has foil on the entire back, not just that little piece over the control cavity. Some MIM models are shielded and some aren't.

mrfix: Thanks! I did that and for a split instant when I first touch the second probe to the strings it reads 1-2 Ohms and then when the probe settles there solid it reads zero. Is that good?

Back on topic with the latest news! .... three weeks passed and still no fix. This beast has had a complete rewire, every joint re-soldered, every pot, switch and jack tested and or replaced....by the first luthier. He then sent it to our regional "guru", who has now done star grounding and a full shielding job on the inside. He is an electronics genius, and cannot find the cause, he reckons he's got it 98% eliminated. I pick it up tomorrow night.
As an addendum, the first luthier mentioned he has just installed VN's for another customer, and has got exactly the same problem. He's waiting to hear back from Fender. Once might be unlucky, two sounds like a conspiracy!
