you can't put fender water slide decals under a nitro finish.

the EJ is nitro with waterslides.

Nov 17th, 2007 11:04 PM   Edit   Profile

check it out ! It may not be waterslide decals.
If I am not wrong, I do not see any decal line
from any pictures from Fender pages nor
any dealer photos.

I do think he was only trying to look out for me but on this occasion I think he defo got it wrong. I mean how could something that plays and sounds this good be a fake?

He seemed to be more of a Jazzer and an archtop/acoustic player more then anything and he was even talking about selling his Tele. He said he was gonna ask his mate who is an 'expert' on these matters what he thought about the decals but I instantly knew who I was gonna ask...thanks again lads!

Lets be honest...some people are not gear whores like the rest of us and simply wouldn't know a slight difference like that. I am assuming that a guitar teacher spends more time playing than hoarding and/or discussing gear (not that there's anything wrong with that, I am a hoarder).

It's not about speed, it's about TONE

That's all fair enough, but he shouldn't start speculating on things he's not informed about. I wouldn't expect a guitar teacher to be an expert on every model of Strat/Tele/Les Paul etc, but at the same time I don't think it's fair to start speculating on fakes and suggesting a student might have one unless you are!

The EJ decal is applied over the finish, as are all AVRI strats. No question.

matsuba, did you let him know what you'd found out, how did he react?

Nov 21st, 2007 12:11 PM   Edit   Profile

Adrian, I haven't been back to him yet. He didn't really have much to teach me that I didn't already know, I think he is a teacher for beginners really.

I'm just glad I've got a bit of reassurance from all you lot.

There is no way EJ would ever allow his decals to be applied under the finish.

Can you imagine the tonal consequences of such a move? ;-p

This was a very informative post. I also have a EJ strat with questionable authenticity. Mine has supposedly aftermarket string trees and holes drilled fr back plate. It definitely has a quartersawn neck but no serial numbers other than the EJ plate over the neck screws. What other identifiers should I be looking for?

11 years and 26 posts. I Googled "fake Johnsons" and now I'm gonna have to delete history and clear cache.

Don't feel bad.

Years ago I needed a photo of actor Peter Ustinov, and I Googled 'Peter pictures.'

I had my 95 amstd Re fretted and refinished about 3 yrs. ago. One of my concerns was the decals being sanded off and having no identifiable logos. The only place you can tell they refinished is around the decals where he had to mask them off during sanding and finishing. A small price to pay for keeping both serial and decals. These were definitely under the finish and still show some of the original that stuck solid and didn't flake off.

In my experience, it's usually best to keep the mouth shut unless you know what you're talking about. Otherwise you leave a gaping hole for inserting a foot into said mouth.

You realize you’re quoting something written 11 years ago, right?
