I drilled the holes today and put it in my '67 and Holy Smokers! what a sound! I apologize to anyone here that I doubted, this thing is sick. I had the CG in an Avatar cab and it was really boomy. I didn't like it at all. Now that it's in the DR it's perfect, no boominess, just solid, tight bass. Thanks Doc and asbestosman for turning me on to this speaker, my long search is over.

There are speakers and then there is the Celestion Gold/50.

When I first installed the speaker in my Deluxe Reverb back in June 2006, everyone was into the Weber 12F150, including myself.

I fell in love with the speaker right and I installed them in many amps since then.

It's my favorite speaker by far.

This speaker is a match made in heaven for the Deluxe Reverb.

I have my 1960 Tweed Deluxe and my 1965 Deluxe Reverb both with Golds in my Music Wing of the house.

So pleased you like it, I have not got one bad Gold speaker yet, they all sound great.

You guys are tempting me with this. But man, 300 bucks for a speaker. Took a quick eBay search and nobody is selling used ones. Looks like folks who bought em keep em. Might just have to buck up and give it a try. This is a great board, I learn tons of stuff here.

"But man, 300 bucks for a speaker."

Yeah, that's alot of hash anyway you look at it. I had the same thought when I put a Blue Alnico in my PRII. But if you think about it, it's not that crazy. People will put hundreds of dollars into tubes, more into transformers and other mods. Why not a one time investment into that big round thing that the sound comes from??

I don't have a vintage Deluxe, but would love to try one in my DRRI.

Yeah I just bought a 300 dollar Zoom H4 recorder or I'd be trying a Gold. I'm going to build a deluxe soon though and use the Gold along with all the best choices of parts. Can't wait!

"But man, 300 bucks for a speaker."

I bid on one from Avatar on ebay, sometimes they sell them raw. I ended up paying $230 shipped. The best speaker I've found so far for my '67 DR was the Jensen C12N Vibranto. I loved that speaker. The Gold blows it's doors off and that's no exaggeration.

Not seeing past posts on the CG, I have to ask about the drilling of holes....?

BTW- I have a Tone Tubby Alnico in my DRRI. Anybody compared this to a CG?

What's the tonal difference between this speaker and a Celestion greenback or V30?

lefty@ny,

There are several threads on drilling out the holes (one with pictures). I just covered every thing with blue painters tape (to prevent the metal shaving from going where they shouldn't), marked the holes and let her rip. Start with small drill and enlarge with a larger bit. It is wise to make the hole a little large for an easy fit.

It is definitely worth the effort.

I'm waiting to hear the answer to Tele295's question. I've got a Vintage 30 in mine.

Watermusic,

Download the Celestion Guitar Speaker pdf Booklet, it describes all the speakers and how they sound.

I cannot describe it better than the folks that make them.

I have all of the Celestion models, some ceramics work well with some amps. The Gold ALNiCo is my new favorite speaker.

DAVC;
are you drilling holes in the golds, or are you removing screws from the baffle?

The Celestion Gold is easily...easily the best speaker I have heard in my BF Deluxe Reverb and here's what I've tried in the last 10 years: Tone Tubby ceramic, Weber C12N, Jensen vintage C12N and C12Q, Weber Blue, JBL vintage, Weber P12Q,and Reverend Alltone. The Weber C12N to me is a real solid choice but had a little trouble with higher notes at loud volume. The Alltone up until now was my first choice as I felt it added a little needed warmth to the DR and held together well at any volume.

But along came this Celestion Gold and it's just a whole level above all the others. The bass especially has this tightness to it, and yet gets a rich deep tone that holds up under higher volumes. And that Celestion alnico shimmer is amazing. Perfect balance of bass, mid and treble and brings out all the great nuances of the amp.

I have to add that I still like the tone of the original Oxford alot at low to mid volumes.

I chose to carefully remove all the staples and grill cloth on my amp and take out four of the screws. Went back together smoothly and works great.

This is a speaker you will have the rest of your life and will put any speaker G.A.S to rest - definitely worth the price.

What Rick said!

I also took out 4 of the screws. Easy and fast.

After putting Golds in my BFDR's, when Doc talks.... I listen.

Best speaker change I've ever made.... without a doubt.

I recently fitted a Gold in my '72 SFDR, after reading the threads here. Just took 4 screws out of the baffle. No problems, and it sounds worlds away from the Jensen reissue C12N I took out. No Contest.
