...when you don't have the blues?
I love blues and try to write blues, but life is pretty good. Not in the sense of the material things in life, just life, family, music and attitude.
Makes it hard to write the blues.

you're not limited to write about your own life.. look at the world around you... poeple you know or down't know. make up a story in your head. but if you want to keep it about yourself, well then you must have been a bad day once??? ever!?!?
i wrote a song called 'i ain't know blues man' and it's pretty much as you described.. it's about how life isn't that bad, my girl didn't leave me, i still have a job and so on, so why am i singing the blues. i forget the words, i have it somewhere on an old hard drive. it wasn't any good but a the same topic.

Don't buy into the myth. You don't have to be opressed, black, poor or anything else.
Talent and work are all that's required.

No, I'm not Afro-American. I understand the origins and history of the blues. However, slavery has been over with (in this country) for a long time and people, both black and white, continue to write new blues material. Things evolve. The world moves on.
For whatever reason, I feel a connection with the blues that I feel with no other style of music. It's what moves me. I just wish I could do a better job of expressing that connection in my own writing.
Thanks for the replys.

It helps.

Wrong. Writing blues requires feeling. Without feeling talent and work does not create the blues.

Yes that would be another complimentary criteria for writing the blues. Being out of luck.
You don't write the blues, the blues writes you.

I recently wrote a blues tune about a crappy gig we had about a year ago.
Twisted all the strange treatment we received into a narrative about a guy on a farm...worked pretty well I think.
Blues doesn't always have to be "I'm broke....oh so broke....I'm broke and my women took the car..."
just my 2 cents.

One of mine was my son going to Iraq. Pretty easy to understand the motivation."Carry on Soldier"
So Far...............you've gone so far away
And it's so Hard.....but I'm prayin' everyday
Carry On Soldier.....til your headed back this way
Stay safe.........and keep that Bible in your vest
Have faith.........you are serving with the best
Carry on Soldier....til you come back west
Be strong..........show courage while you're there
Hang on............hurry back to those who care
Carry on Soldier...while you've got this cross to bear.
It's on our new CD. If you want to hear go to link. Track # 2 on player.

Here are some more fun stereotypes:
I can't write a pop song cause I'm not a 19 year old media whore
I can't write classical music because I'm not old and I don't have a powdered wig
I can't write jazz cause I don't have a beret and I don't smoke weed
I can't write country music cause i don't live on a farm or own a truck
I can't write a folk song cause I wasn't a hippie in the sixties
Shall we keep going or have I made my point?
P.S. If you read up on the origins of the blues, you'll find that people sang the blues to get their minds *off* the blues. Sometimes that came out in the form of singing about what their troubles were, but just as often the songs were about wine, women, travelling, partying, whatever made them forget their troubles. It's a shame that everybody now thinks the blues *has* to be about "well my woman runned off ba dum ba dum".

I've found that some of my old rock ballad/folky kind of songs can be used in blues format, same words different chord structure.
Actually surprising how easy it was for some.
