Hello,
Nashville "mentors" are always saying you have to have uptempo modern sounding songs that are positive and make the singer look good. Well here's one where you might not like the character and there is no light at the end of the tunnel -- sort of a downer all around! To top it off, I turned it into a country waltz -- which I heard was popular in the 60's and 70's (ha, ha, ha).
I just couldn't hit the harmonies, so I left them out for now.
Enjoy!

She Drinks
(c) Emmrich, Emmrich, Keith 2009
Kevin: Vocals, acoustic guitar (with background washing machine)
BIAB: midi bass, guitar, piano, fiddle, strings and choir. Pedal steel and drums.
(verse)
liquor laced coffee
greets the morning sun
booze and caffeine
eases last night's dream
(verse)
she stumbles through life
no peace can she find
She stop and stares
as it clouds her mind
(chorus)
she drinks and she drinks
don't care how it looks
she once had it all
Does God know what he took?
she tries to forget
what she has lost
one more cigarette,
no counting the cost
(verse)
the red and greens
have blended to gray
the highs and low
have become a plateau
(verse)
but flat has been slanted
she's sliding down
she wonders how long
before she hits the ground
(chorus again)
(instrumental break)
(bridge) **
she once had a love
a child or two
spirited away
by the wheel of a drunk
(chorus again)
(tag)
well she knows how she looks
but does God know what he took?
** for those that can't handle the "a child or two" line, make believe that I am singing this for the bridge:
(alternate bridge)
she once had a love
a child I'm told
spirited away
by the wheel of a drunk

I really like this one Kevin. I think some three part vocal harmony in the chorus would be a nice add. Nice work!
The theme of the song reminds of 'Whiskey Lullaby' but I like your tempo here and the lyrics tell a great story!

FGP: Thanks. I tried the harmonies, but they sounded pretty bad on my first try. I'll attempt it again. Maybe I can my wife to go country for just an hour or so!
I listened to whisky lullaby with Brad Paisly and Alison Krause -- now that's a sad song!

re: the harmonies, pick out the notes on a guitar (or other instrument) and it helps you to remember where you wanna be.
Yeah, Whisky Lullaby, sad, but great story and duet!
