Fender...never say never.

Fender serials are not always reliable for dating. Which gets us back to your necks. But....

Also, the pots, if original, will have nomenclature that may be of some help. Pickups and pickup cavities often have dates.

I have a '77 P Bass I bought new in Feb 1977. It has no date stamp on the heel.

it's been years since I took my 74 tele bass (origional owner) apart but IIRC, it also has no date on the heel of the neck. I don't think it would have faded - it was only a couple of years after I got it that I took it apart (in a desperate attempt to stableise the 3 bolt neck attachment).

these neck dates: Arrr ... be more a guideline than a code...

OK, OK, I give up. Fender didn't date any necks after 1966.

Only kidding. What is true is that "no neck date" threads often quickly become a mutual admiration society.

I just checked Molinaro's book on the Fender bass and I don't see anything written that says that on such and such a date (year) Fender stopped dating necks.

He does say that from 1969-1980, an ink-stamped coding system was used, which can be difficult to interpret.

@edmonstg

in other words, it's probable that there are dates there, but not guarenteed?

could be slackness in the workplace: "oops, missed a few ... meh, no biggie"
or "OK, which of you jokers have hidden the date stamper!?!"
or they were really busy
or a new employee forgot it was his job
new forman streamlining processes

hey, I write software for a living. A small slipup at the start can have unseen reprocussions down the track... ("are you _sure_ this is a '74 Tele bass you're selling? Where's the date stamp on the neck?!?")

(no, the old girl isn't for sale. She'll go with me to my grave)

I think what I'm saying, and there's plenty of evidence right here on this thead, is that Fender put out necks that were never dated. And others that were date-stamped and the ink has disappeared.

That serial number does put it in the 1967 Ballpark.
Could the fact that one is Fretless have something to do with it? I have never seen the end of a fretless neck.

How about a couple of pictures for us Fender Bass Hounds?

This also didn't just end at Fender. I have one preEB StingRay with no neck date. But similar to a Fender, there is a body date, pots.

We should be careful to not polarize into always/never; it's bad enough in the political arena without having it spill into basses. :^) Dating an older Fender is a wholistic endeavor that does not involve a single dispositive factor, but the aggregate of date stamps, pot codes, wire type, color, finish materials, decals, smell, wear, look, features, hand scribbles, routs, humps, stamps, holes, smears, oversprays, wood type, etc., etc.

Tony Bacon, in "50 Years of Fender", states that neck dates ceased to be used from 73 until early 80s, but I'm thinking he meant that 'obvious' dating was replaced with the difficult-to-interpret codes, up to 81 according to Black/Molinaro.

+1 Iconoclast, a great summary of the dating process. I have a jazz bass that was sold to me as a '74. It's a sunburst/rosewood board 4 bolt with the tug bar below the G string old school style. Serial# indicates 73 to 74. The eight digit neck code says 72. All three pot codes indicate 73. Each pickup is also dated 1973. I'm calling it a 73 for the time being since I've yet to find a 74 part on it. The neck stamp on this and my 83 pbass are faint but still legible at this point. Dating this jazz is an ongoing process.

I also like this very much, especially for the period in question.

"We should be careful to not polarize into alawys/never;"

Very true.
Just this week on another forum was a discission on such a neck.
The 'problem' with many folks on that forum is if there's no neck date, then it's always a fake. But then we find out these same folks never owned an old Fender in their life. Sometimes my head hurts....

My uncle bought a brand new '71 P bass in 1972 and I'm the only one who has ever taken it apart. The neck date has almost disappeared. Only the 71 is visible. But hardly. I had to look very close to it for many minutes so I could say it's a '71

My 50s Franken-P has no neck date either, only a red stamp (wood burned?) on the bottom between the screw holes that says "Leo"!!!!

The body is marked 53 and the neck plate has a 56 serial number.

I also have a very rare 1967 Jazz Bass with a Maple capped neck and NO Neck date. The Decal is original and correct. The body of the guitar was refinished Olympic White. I figured that because the guitar was a maple capped J-Bass that it was a NAMM show guitar in 1967 and was one of a kind. If there is anyone out there that has every seen a 1967 J-bass with a maple capped neck, please e-mail me. Thanks Bob O.
