Listening to it again recently I was struck by the reverb sound on the vocals. Obviously a super studio reverb of some sort but does anyone know which ones the top studios of the time would use?

I've seen Motown studios' reverb chambers in person. - in Detroit. Actual real rooms - speaker in one end, mic in the other. One of them is built into the attic of the building (which is actually a humble 2 story house). Saw it as part of an AES chapter meeting in Detroit a couple years ago - Tony Bongiovi was the featured speaker (Jon BonJovi's uncle, and an engineer at Motown for years then founded the Power Station studio in NYC years later).
Most likely, that's what the producers for the Beach Boys used.
The verb on that track doesn't sound like a plate or spring reverb.

Abbey Road has 'em as well... just big hard-surfaced rooms with speakers and mics.

That song was recorded over a long period of time at a number of different LA studios. All of the top studios had echo chambers.
I remember going to do mixes in LA because they had better chambers. Some of them are gone now, but many still remain- Capitol's studio has several great chambers.

"does anyone know which ones the top studios of the time would use?"
At that time it would have been a chamber as described above or an EMT plate reverb.

That pause at 2:56 is one of the great moments in pop music, and just one of the elements that make this one of the best pop songs every. Hadn't thought about how that reverb contributes before.
That's 3+ minutes of perfection right there.

Brian Wilson reportedly recorded that in his empty swimming pool.
