Does anybody have or has heard these cheaper alternatives to the EMG set ?

Is this too good to be true ?

I'm betting that it is, but you'll never know until you try...

Hey myshka,

I've been here before, many times.

I contacted Ken and asked a lot of questions.

Ok! here is what I found out.

Probably comes from the same factory as EMG, but not branded.

Now the EMG - DG20 which I own, comes with SA - A meaning alnico magnets, so the S which has a ceramic magnet.

They do make the SA but for some reason prefer to push the S, you have to contact Ken and ask them for the same setup but with the SA Pickups.

Now on to the Pots, they are push pull pots, so to engage you have to push or pull them depending on how they are configured. The EMG are bypassed on zero and turned up to engage them.

If you "youtube" and type in dragonfire pickups, there is a guy there who does a clean and distortion demo. Not sure if they are the SA or S Pickups.

So they some differences, but for the money they are cheap enough to buy an try.

I was lucky enough to buy a guitar with them on.

Hope this helps,

Gezza.

Thanks for the heads up Gezza ... I wrote them a letter inquiring about the S and SA pups.
They sound good on the clean portion of the demo ...unfortunately the *distortion portion's choice of music sucked so badly I could only endure a few brief moments of it. You would think that the guy would have played some Gilmour-esque stuff to demo these.

I pulled the trigger on these.
As soon as they arrive I will report back and let you know if I sound EXACTLY like David Gilmour ... ;)

I started a thread in the guitar repairs forum but maybe I should have asked here ...

I got the pick guard today The instructions mention that the stereo jack is soldered but should be de-soldered and re-soldered after passing wires through the body.
There is no mention of the grounding wires from body and trem-claw to pot. Do I take it that they are not necessary with these pubs or is it a given and I should know that I have to re-connect these grnd wires to the pot on the new pick guard?

I'm dying here because I'm very anxious to try these out but I don't want to risk doing something stupid that would let escape the magic smoke that is in all electrical components and if it escapes they stop working. :0

Hey myshka,

no ground wire required for the trem claw, is correct. As they are Active not passive.

Take your time, and make sure that the pickups are set up very high.

I like them, but still not sure I lovem yet. They sound very clear and clean, but to my ears lack the sweetness of my Fender Vintage Noiseless Pickups with a EC Boost.

But nice to have a few different Pickups on your strat.

This is not going as planned.
read about it in the repairs and mods forum and I'll keep this thread for a review of the pups if and when I get them to work.

Update:
Well the first PG was returned as faulty. It could have arrived like that or it could have fried because of loose pot or just me being more-stoopider than I thought.
Ken at TNT guitars had me return it and sent me off a new one no questions asked.

First impressions: I like !

I have yet to learn the subtleties of the controls but so far I get a wide range of tones from these pups. I can go from a full on humbucker honk to the typical single coil chime and it still quacks in the 2 and 4 positions . I get a great OD/distortion without the use of pedals and can shape it anyway I like. The bridge pup can be made to howl .

Very Gilmouresque !

Quality is decent considering the price and is a great alternative to the more expensive EMG offering.

After playing around for a couple of days I am still amazed at how close to Gilmour's Red Strat these PUs sound. This is not your typical Strat sound but if you liked the tone of Gilmour on Delicate Sound of Thunder-Live these pups will get you there at about half the price of the EMG's.
When listening to Delicate Sound Of Thunder I found that on many solos David's guitar sounded almost like he was playing through a wah pedal in a fixed position. The Dragon fires will find that tone easily when playing with the expander control. Sustain for days !
I use a Proco Turbo Rat and a Carbon Copy delay with a touch of on-board chorus from my Vox AD50 and it gets me there.
Big thumbs up for this inexpensive alternative to EMG and to Ken at TNT guitars for the excellent customer service.
