Pattin' myself HARD on the back here!

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I played solo gigs that each lasted 4 hours with my Guild D-55 acoustic, Fender Acoustasonic Jr DSP amp, and BOSS BCB-6 case loaded with my fav pedals.

Only took one short break each day. No setlist, no crib notes, all covers of songs from the 50/60/70's. MAJOR calouses on my fingertips!

I have about 100 songs in my catalog of tunes I cover and think I played all of them. I'm lucky my 64 year old mind can still remember all that stuff!

Scene of the action was Filoli Center on the San Francisco Peninsula. This is the place used as "The Carrington Mansion" on the old TV show "Dynasty".

Dang, I miss Linda Evans...

That's a lot of work!

I'll be singing two of the three hours at the old folks home next month and I'm already constructing the set lists to pace myself among songs and split time with the other singer.

4 hours solo acoustic is like Superman!

6L6 has no shortage of nice acoustic guitars. I'm guessing the left hand is not as bad as it ought to be...

Great job!

Thanks Dudes!

Yep, I'm going to change the strings (and battery) on my Guild this evening.

Fortunately, my major league calouses held up thru the performances. Somehow, my voice did too!

Ah......6 that place reminds me of the Villa Montalvo down in Los Gatos/Saratoga. Nice place. Amazing that back in the day these places were built and by todays standards are still considered mansions.

Wow, impressive! How many did you play each time? Do you repeat? Do you extend or improvise songs if the mood strikes?

"How many did you play each time? Do you repeat? Do you extend or improvise songs if the mood strikes...?"

Having grown up in the golden age of Rock & Roll, Folk, and Folk Rock music (I'm 64), it was relatively easy for me to come up with a list of 100 songs. I didn't have to learn the words (knew them already from singing along all these years with Oldies Radio), just the chords and riffs.

I like to tell a short tale between songs that gives the audience some history about the next song I'm playing. I've been a music trivia junkie since the day I was born, so this too required no new learning on my part.

Playing in a Classic Oldies R&R Band the last 26 years also allowed me to adapt many of our band covers to solo covers.

I did repeat songs over the course of three days. However, I played four hours with no repeats on each given day.

One thing is for sure. If you play covers of songs that sold millions of records, you KNOW the audience is going to like the music.

As for improvising, I do very little of that. I try to sound as close to the original recordings as I can get.

"If you play covers of songs that sold millions of records, you KNOW the audience is going to like the music."

i.e. the time before the music world was broken into smaller and smaller niches. I think awhile back you mentioned that you had hauled out "Hanky Panky". It does get a great response for sure.

So, what is the 6L6 Top 100 list?

"So, what is the 6L6 Top 100 list...?"

For starters, get down a BUNCH of Buddy Holly. People ALWAYS love BH!

Throw in some Beach Boys, James Taylor, Steven Stills, Peter/Paul & Mary, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Bob Dylan, Johnny Rivers, Chuck Berry, Arlo Guthrie (Comin' into Los Angeles" always gets a cheer), Byrds (lay "8 Miles High" on 'em for starters), and, of course, LOTS of Neil Young.

That'll get you pointed in the right direction.

I've also done lots of four hour gigs in a row like that (solo vocals and guitar). I have no problem with it generally. However, I once did a 7 hour gig on New Years Eve. My voice was shot the next day. I'll never do that again. What was I thinking?
