Get a Vox Pathfinder 15R, $100 plus change, and mike it or run it through an extension cab.
Pure Vox bliss on the cheap.

An AC15 Heritage (head or cab) will do it for you.
You only need the AC30 if you plan to make monsterous noise and are prepared to be told by absolutely everyone to turn down even when the dial is just on one.

I love my Vox Nightrain. Clean chime to good ole Vox crunch. Vox's nighttrain is a head though sou you would need a cab for it. I use a lopo 2x12 cab slant front convertible back loaded with a Weber blue dog and silver bell 15 watts each ceramic mags. What a great combination!

They don't make them any longer but about 8 years ago, you could get a Vox AC15TBX, made in England but with a board and tubes wired into it. They were about $800 without a Ceslestion Blue.

+1 on the Nightrain, I have the Nightrain cabin with the greenback. It will run you about the same as an AC15, but you get a half power switch for small clubs or studio.

+1 on the Nightrain. My guitarist in the Cincy band has one and loves it. Always sounds great at practice, and the head is very easy to move around. It's about the size of a toaster.

If, and I mean IF, I look for a vintage AC 30, are there certain years of manufacture I do or do not want?
Thanks,

Another plug for the Vox Pathfinder 15R. Don't let the size , price. and specsheet fool you. A very inexensive way to see if you like the Vox tone - and it's full of it. I have several larger Fenders incl. a couple of vintage plus a C600 but I love the P15R...........so much that I have two!

I have two such rigs I rely upon for almost exclusively Vox Tone. One is a Vox Valvetronix AD50VT hybrid modeling amp. The AC30TB channel doesn't get any closer than this to it's real AC30 cousins.
Same story for other rig which is a Vox Valvetronix Tonelab hybrid amp/processor in front of a Crate Blackheart Little Giant 5 watt all tube amp.
In all honesty, all mentioned and much more out there for a decent price will get you good Vox tone. And they come in ss, ss/tube (hybrid), or all tube options. Or like in one of my rigs, a combination. Happy hunting!!

I love my Night train so much most of my other amps are sadly neglected! I find I am drawn to the Vox tone now and it is pushing me towards an AC30 but I am not sure it is any better then the night train. I have never played another Vox amp.

Save up for the AC30. If you don't, you will be miserable; a mere shell of what was once a man...until you get that AC30.
Children will whisper and point at you on the street: "That used to be a man..."
Mothers pushing prams will cross to the other sidewalk, rather than pass you closely by.
Birds will fall dead from tree branches as you skulk by in an abject stupor of Voxless poverty.
Your self respect has GOT to be worth more than a mere twelve hundred George Washington dollars.
Vox UP, brother!

And while your saving up for an AC30...
book yourself into some body building classes.
'cause, if you don't and you actually get an AC30...
you'll eventually be spending the same amount of cash on a decent chiro.

I had one in the early 90s. But I was playing hard rawk, and unloaded it. Back then, only Beatles tribute bands used Voxes =o)

Vox has fairly recently released the Valve Reactor series of "hybrid" (tube/solid state) amps labeled AC15VR and AC30VR.
The AC15VR sells new for $380 at Musicians Friend.
(AC15VR "used condition 1" for $335 at Musicians Friend)
The AC30VR sells new for $550 at Musicians Friend.
Not "exactly" the vintage AC30TBX, but according to the Vox "faithful" on several Vox discussion forum, the VR series is about 90% of the sonic quality of the all tube AC30CC.
A few years ago, the Vox loyal had a "Voxfest" where a blind shoot out was held to find the sweetest, most "traditional" Vox tone.
The "made in UK" Korg/Vox from the post 1993 era won the shoot out over the early 60s, mid 60s...etc.
So, are you willing to settle for "very close" or do you want the real thing.
Personally, I own an early 2000-2002 era Vox Cambridge 30 Reverb Twin (2-10, 30 Watts, hybrid tube/solid state). If you have the modifications done to the C30RT, it can generate around 56 Watts which makes it "sing" and even more "Voxy" in tone. Around $250-$300 used. No, mine is NOT for sale.
I also own a first generation (circa 2000) Vox Pathfinder 15 (pre reverb). Sweet sounding for very small events or home play.
And more than a few like the Valvetronix models...and North Coast Music offers many of the "AD" series in traditional Vox grill cloth.
