Several months ago we were asked to be part of a benefit concert for a local high school's music program. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Originally it was supposed to be in said high school's auditorium but they wanted $3,000 for rental (???), so it was moved to a community theatre venue, which was - I think - donated.
It was supposed to be us as openers. The headliners were a local band that has been defunct for more than 20 years in a "reunion " concert. During it's hayday this bad was very well-known in the area, as a sort of Sha-Na-Na type act. The reunion was members from diffeent eras of the band. 12 performers - eight musicians and five vocalists. A few of them stayed active in music at least upon occasion.
A couple of weeks ago we were told that we would have to cut our time slot down from 90 minutes to 45 as another act had been added. Turned out to be a nephew of one of the deceased members of the oldies group, and his band.
Arrived at the venue, approximately 450 seats, for a sound check, at 10:00 AM. Someone had connections with a pro sound outfit out of Chicago and they were setting up an arena sized system. When the doors opened at noon, the first band had barely done a sound check and they proceeded to the new show opener - a 2009 graduate of the high school doing an acoustic set. She was a not bad but not many girls under the age of 21 should ever do Folsom Prison Blues, except maybe Janis Joplin.
The nephew's band was next. Can't really criticize their music or performance. Even my wife liked the lead singer's voice- and she's picky. However the volume level drove a lot of folks out to the lobby for most of their set. Would have thought that the sound crew could have had a little more control over that.
By this time we were told that we would have to cut our set to 30 mins.
Earlier I thought that I would bring my own amp as there was supposed to be a "jam" song at the end. If I used one of the other bands amps it would not be available for me during the jam. So I opted for my VoxVT30 AD. We were instructed to set up as quickly as we could between sets. I put my Vox on a corner of one of the drum risers, plugged in and ready to go and assumed that one of the sound crew would move a mic in front of it as all the other amps were miced or DI'd.
Long story short, we did one heck of a job despite no sound check, and a less than perfect monitor mix. We''re a four piece classic rock band with emphasis on acoustic and electric blend and all of us sing, so there are a lot of harmonies. We got applause from the get go. My little Vox was more than sufficient- even without being miked. Got some applause for several of my solos. Only downside was that we got the "cut" sign before we could get our full 30 mins in and were unable to do two of our principal vocalist's originals. Walked off that stage feeling like - if not the Beatles or the Boss,- at least South Side Johnny or Steve Miller.
The oldies band followed a half hour intermission and played for about an hour and a half, by the time we decided to go for dinner.
The evening show went about the same, sans the acoustic girl, and we were smart enough to put our originals into the early part of our set, which was again cut short. Nor was my Vox miked again. But my son was able to tape the show and the sound was well balanced.
Much thanks to my band mates, Jerry Allen, Mark Douglas ( DR. Bass MD) and his brother Tim for their usual superb job and giving me the chance to be a rock star, albeit a geezer.
BTW the good doctor had surgery last Thursday and was gigging and singing two shows on Saturday. Extra thanks to him.

shunka, sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. I wish I had been there to hear you guys. It's always nice to hear some applause during a song and again after the song. I'm sure you guys are good.

My son is going to put the video up soon.
I guess I should mention that this the first time in nearly five decades that I have played a "concert." It's a little different when you know that folks are there to hear you and aren't concerned with their next drink or whose phone number they want to get.

Sounds like a great time. Was the headliner act Phil Dirt? They were pretty big on the county fair circuit, way back when, and very good at what they did.

"My son is going to put the video up soon."

Um, we'll get an opportunity to overdub our clams first, right?

;)

It was a chaotic, if a little unorganized, fun time. I did feel bad for Jerry, though, when they told us to cut it short. He didn't look pleased.

Jerry stayed late and a lot of people came up and complimented him/us.
Clams were minimal and not obvious.
Also getting the impression that we may have been cut short for, let's just say, "less than professional reasons." Well. we handled it gracefully and professionally.
And you know what they say about karma, and what goes around.

I prefer to not give the headliner any publicity.
I had several folks tell me that some of the members did a TV interview during the week and didn't mention us at all. There were a few other similar instances although we did rate a 1/3 page in the event program.

I'm not sure that THEY jerked us around. We were told it was a benefit concert. Which it was. It was also their reunion, which I think was their focus. I suspect that things like the set shortening were instigated more by the folks who organized the concert, either because of lack of experience ( trying to cram four acts into too short of a time frame ) or because they were fans of the feature act ( and feared we might overshadow them ).
Most of the oldies band seemed like pretty decent folk. Of course there's always a knucklehead in every crowd.

Finally got one song up on youtube. More to come.
www.youtube.com/user/SUBROSAOHIO.
That may not work as I'm even worse on computer than guitar. Search youtube for SUBROSAOHIO.
If you can find Jerry Allen and the Subrosa band on shutterfly there area couple of other videos.
