Recently I saw Cindy Cashdollar on the TV (ACL) wailing away backing Van Morison on steel guitar and have become smitten with this instrument.

What's the scoop on the Stringmaster 8's? Anyone here have experience with them? I hear parts are hard to come by, especially replacement tuners which is kind of critical. They also come in different scale lengths. Which is the better?

I think this instrument is due to a resurgence, it totally swings! Maybe Fender will start making them again? I think they still make a Champ lap steel. I want a three or maybe even a four neck! 8 string is a must (as apposed to 6).

There's a guy in Southern California who makes dead on copies with modern hardware. Go to the Steel Guitar Forum and check the archives. Lots of good info.

There are a lot of people who consider the 'Stringmaster' family of P'ups to be Leo's masterpiece.
And Leo was one of them.

I have a Stringmaster Double 8. Fun steel, but the neck selector is a push-button (like the old push-button light switches) that does seem to wear out faster than any other.

BTW & FYI - Leg clutches worn out? Stringmaster legs are identical to and interchangeable with those found on Rhodes piano. I think somebody makes repro legs for the Rhodes, which should work on this steel too

I thought I'd get skunked bringing up this subject. Glad to hear there are others around interested in steel and pedal steel.

I have begun my search for a Stringmaster and am finding they are apparently as rare as hen's teeth. They're out there, but not like Stats are out there. If I can't find something decent I'll contact the guy on the Steel Forum. I've been eavesdropping there recently. I'm in no hurry.

Yes! Those pups sound great!

Oh- and info those legs being interchangeable will probably be worth knowing!

For what it's worth, this Fender triple neck steel just showed up on the Denver craigslist today. I'm not the seller nor do I know him - just passing along as a public service announcement.

Asking $1500

Does anyone here know anything about the difference between the "string through" vs. "string over" pups and perhaps your preference on these old Stringmasters?

I may be wrong, but I think the string through pups were early, I've seen them on K & F and early Fender single neck models.

I have a '56 6 string single neck champ and it has string over pups.

Thanks Tom2. I think you're right about the string through pups being on the early models. I'm wondering if there is a difference between the two in sound. If so, what is the dif?

The biggest difference between the string-thru pickups and the later 2xsingle coils is that the later setup with 2 pickups per neck is humcancelling, RWRP pickups. The string-thru just has a single single-coil pickup and is therefore more susceptible to hum.

Mmmmmm, zombie brains!
