I think this is a pretty darn good sounding amp. I noodled around on one Saturday with my SG. It's handwired, ptp, and has a birch ply cab. The build quality seems to be top notch. It also has some nice features including a footswitch for using the boost feature.

Been thinking about one.
All of my amps are 10 watts or
less, so it would fit right in.
One can pick up the head version for under $180.00.

I received my VHT Special 6 combo, this week. It's a hand wired eyelet board construction. Fairly simple and easy to work on. It seems to be well built, and is much heavier than other amps, in it's class. It has a good clean headroom, for a small amp. It's more than loud enough for my band practice, with a controlled drummer.
Controls are very simple: Volume and Tone controls. High and Low inputs. Boost by pulling the Volume control, or included foot switch. In the normal mode (no boost), it sounds like a blackface Champ. The Treble, Mids and Bass are set with hard wired resisters. The sound is well balanced. You can modify the sound by changing resister values.
When you use the boost function, it cuts-out the EQ section. This is where the amp really shines. It has great tweed sounds. The overdrive is very controlable, for a non-master volume amp. The Tone (treble cut), still functions. Overall, I'm very pleased with the amp. It's like getting a blackface and tweed Champ, for $200.

Did you go for the combo or head? My brain says to get the combo because it's small enough to be used as a head. Additionally, if you plug a speaker cab into one of the 3 jacks (it accepts 4, 8 and 16 ohm cabs), it overrides the internal speaker. Thus, you can have a great little grab and go combo amp or you can use it as a head.
That said, I didn't care for the internal speaker much. I thought the head running through the open back cab was much better sounding. Also, I'm a sucker for a head and cab; not much into combo amps anymore, although I do have a Pro Jr.

I went with the combo. I'm the singer, lead guitarist, and husband of the drummer, in a rockabilly band. So, I have to haul the PA, speakers, monitors, drums, 2 guitar amps, 2 or 3 guitars (my wife also plays guitar).
My only head and speaker is a: Kustom '72 Hardtop (4X6L6's), with a 2X10 cabinet. When I plug another speaker into the Special 6, it doesn't cut the internal speaker out.
The internal speaker sounds close to my Eminence Legend 105's, that I like for tweed sounds. It's not as bright as my Jensen C10R, which gives it more of a scooped blackface sound.
I bought the amp, because it would be easy to modify or repair. So far, all I've done is remove the VHT logo. It just looks to big for a little amp.

Ah, I was told by the dealer it does. Oh well, that's not a big deal as long as the internal speaker can be unplugged. Otherwise, my decision just got simpler. :)

Is the footswitch included with the head version? Also, what is the power switchable between? I noticed this in the latest Guitar Player and was instantly interested; seems like it'd fit nicely between a Champ and AC4!

Yes, the footswitch is included. The power is switchable between 3 and 6 watts. It is a LOUD 6 watts, can keep up with a 15 watt Pro Jr.

You would have to remove the screen from the back of the combo, to unplug the internal speaker. I did that anyway. I've never burned myself on a tube. But, I have almost dropped amps becase I stepped on a dangling cord.

Have any of you 5E3 guy's, tried this amp?
In the boost mode, it really reminds me of my tweed Deluxe. Even though it only has a single 6V6, smaller speaker and cabinet, it seems as loud and tonefull.

Update: I bought the head and closed back cab today. The closed back cab was less boomy on the bass to me ears. It had a nice sound to it.

Congratulations!
I'm really happy with mine. I'm lovin' the tweed sound of the boost mode. The boost grounds out the hard wired EQ resisters, for Bass, Treble and Mids. With the no negative feedback design, it's pretty close to a tweed Deluxe.

Btw, You said the internal speaker on yours doesn't get bypassed when you plug in a extension cab. I obviously can't try it because I got the head, but the owners manual (yes, I actually read them, lol) says the internal speaker is bypassed when using one of the speaker out jacks. That's also what I was told by the dealer last week. You might want to check on it with yours.
