Just curious: who memorizes lyrics before they are performed and who uses written copies?

IMO reading them is less professional, so I strive to memorize.
But... sometimes the first word for the wrong verse just "comes out" and you're stuck singing them out of order. Luckily, for many songs, it doesn't really matter.

I use cheat sheets with the first couple of lines for each verse so I dont sing em out of order. I rarely have to use em.... much more professional to memorize em

I am having a lot of trouble with "Come Together". Wierd lyrics and a lot of them are somewhat similar but different. The trouble with doing a good song with gobbledy gook lyrics. I love ya John, but ya know ya did it.

Does not bother me since I'm not a pro. I have a stand with lyrics and chords. I've always had Alzheimer lite and occasional blackouts.

We played a gig last night and I used a cheat sheet up on a floor monitor for "White Room". I have all the verses down but for some reason can't remember the order of the choruses anymore.
Old age setting in. I've always been pretty good with wordy tunes, like "The Weight".

Now in my 'senior' years I've been relying on my 'book' the last ten or so. Anything newer doesn't seem to stick as well. But, I can still do the rock 'oldies' from memory that I sang as a teen in the 60's. Maybe it's because of higher repetition back then.

i memorize em but have seen some great iPad and Androd tablet apps along with a mic stand clip. So you get back lit lyrics with a wireless foot switch to scroll or to change pages and no one is the wiser.
and its small, non wired and you can glance as you need to. Beats cheat sheets in old man font onc the floor or monitors
I also play keys and my roland has a 4x4 LCD screen I can upload text files to and scroll. i use that a lot for cheat sheets
Dont like to use a book but many pros do. As long as you are not glued to it and can interact with the crowd then i say its all good. Only the musicians in the audience will care :)

I find it almost impossible to play (keyboards) and remember lyrics at the same time, so I have to have the lyrics in front of me. At 58, I'll have to admit that I can't get away with the cheat sheets -- which were actually index cards -- that I used years ago. Can't read 'em, either!

I have used flip folders which is what the players in marching bands use. Its a 5x7 thin rolodex that can hold cheat sheets between teh clear palstic covers. I can see far but not up close so I have used them on the keyboard and just flip thru the songs. Double sided so flip it over and use the back for the next set

I've also gone to using a tablet to hold lyrics for me.. There are some songs that the lyrics stick in my head and some that don't want to stay in there. I used to use a small 3-ring binder and custom make my lyric sheets so I didn't have a large music stand in front of me.. Starting tomorrow night I'll be using the tablet and Guitar Tapp app.
It will be more like the major touring acts that have the lyrics scrolling on a computer monitor disguised as a monitor speaker. I don't always need the cheat sheets but it's comforting to have them in front of me if I need to glance down and make sure I'm getting it right. I would rather get the song right than mumble something or just plain not get anything close.

what I want is a teleprompt with a large font so I don't have to wear my glasses on stage. I can ignore the teleprompt if I know the lyrics.

I just bought an inexpensive Android tablet primarily for displaying lyrics. Haven't used it live yet, but I have put all the songs from the current setlist into PDF files -- one set per file -- and all I have to do is tap the right side of the screen to go to the next page/song. If I can work out how to mount it by then, I might try it out at a private party in a couple days.

Update: I used that Android tablet at the private party and don't think I'll go back to paper. It worked out great! A little washed out in the sunlight, but still readable, and no pages blowing in the wind. ;-)
