Virtually everything on the Hellecasters first record "The Return of the Hellecasters", particularly Will Ray on "Sweet Dreams", all of them on "Orange Blossom Special", Will Ray on "Hellecaster Stomp", John Jorgenson on "Passion", Jerry Donahue on "Menage: The Beak/The Claw". What a fantastic assembly of guitar mastery yet melodic and memorable.

IMHO, Doc Watson was having an especially good day when they recorded the first "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album in 1971. Check out his work on "I Saw The Light", Wabash Cannonball", and the title cut--all faithful to the melody, but well-phrased, with interesting syncopations and just enough surprises to keep things interesting.

Larry Carlton on "Kid Charlemagne"
Slash on "November Rain"
Duane and Dickey on "Blue Sky"
Pat Metheny on "Tell It All"
Not sure who plays it, but the outro solo on "King of the World" by Steely Dan is killer.
These are the first ones to come to mind.
