I just finished shave #3 in a Muhle R41 with a Personna. Seems that 3 is the max in that razor while 4 is pretty std in the EJ. Perhaps the more aggressive blade angle dulls it faster?
In any case, the last 2 days I've been using the Arko stick -vs- Proraso, and last week traveling had only the Arko. That product makes excellent, cushioning lather and while different than some of the cream products, is no hassle for carry-on bags when flying. And no, the strong soapy-citrus smell is not that a big deal. These things run about $3-4 each and are on our AMZN sponsor too.

How many people on the FDP have converted to the DE shaving cult. I'm curious.

While AMZN is a great option for DE gear, I just got an email from the EJ direct retail site (englishshaving.com) that offers free shipping across the pond until 17 June for a 10GBP order or more.
Their brushes are really well-priced, but not until checkout do you see the converted GBP-US$ price less the 20% VAT. You don't have to pay until you see the final price. I like their Super Badger line for the price and performance.
You can do better on AMZN for some of their lineup but there a lot of them that are cheaper on this site and also some you can't find here in the USA.

Well, it's been almost a month and it's time to take off the training wheels. I found out that my Merkur doesn't have adjustment to let out more of the blade like a traditional razor, so I'll be looking for an adjustable one now. Let the bleeding begin!

I have an EJ super badger in about 21-22mm and think it's an excellent brush. Certainly holds its own against the Kent BK4 and T&H Classic both of which are silver tip brushes.

Which Merkur are you using now? I started on the 23c (aka 180) and moved to the Merkur Slant 37c after reading about it's efficiency. That worked great for several months before moving to the Muhle R41.
The vintage Gillette Slim and Fatboy adjustables are widely available on eBay at reasonable prices if you are set on an adjustable. I also think they are very esthetically pleasing and a reminder of the American manufacturing superiority of that era. It's nice to have one even if, like me, you settle on different go-to razor.

Actually, I don't know which model it is as it doesn't have any other markings beside Merkur Solingen, Germany. It has a hole on the bottom but lacks the knob for adjustment. I'll look into a used Gillette Slim/fatboy. Thanks for the tip cf.

My face was all hot and sweaty from doing yard-work today, so I treated myself to a brand new Feather blade, lathered up and got to it.
It was probably the best shave I've had yet.

Well of course I took a shower.
It was just after my shave rather than before... something I wouldn't ordinarily do.

Well, I wasn't all hot and sweaty but I just showered and shaved and had just a superior shave tonight.
Mitchell's Wool Fat soap (kept in an OS mug to load), Vulfix Grosvenor mixed brush, more face lathering than bowl lathering (although it was about 50-50, one shave old Wilkenson in my '64 Super Speed Gillette. Alum block and Trumper's Coral Skin Food to finish. I smell like a bouquet of fresh roses. ;o)
I dare you to rub my face against the grain. I dare you!

Anyone tried Tabac soap?
I've been on it for several weeks now. Very rich lather which is Tallow based (I think)but the most distinguishing character is the tabaco scent. Not tabaco scent like an ashtray full of extinguished Marlboros, but more like a mild unlit cigar. A nice departure from the floral, citrus, or powdery scents that a lot of creams and soaps have.
The lather is very robust too. After my final rinse and the water is drained from the basin, the residue left in the basin is not just a "film" like other soaps/creams I use, but a hearty accumulation of lather that still has some loft left to it.

I know it's a popular shaving product but the description of the scent by many has kept me from even wanting to try it in spite of how well it might work. So does oil but I don't want to shave with that either.

Cigar tobacco as much as I love the smell of them is not something I want my face to smell like.

I quit cigarettes 10 weeks ago, I'm afraid I might try to light the tabac stick or maybe smear it on my fingers I should probably stay away. I did get 2 tubs of tobs sandalwood on a deal from somewhere, I love that stuff, the smell, the lather, the slickness I have found my favorite early, I have a drawer full of other stuff to use when I want a change but the tobs gets the most use.

Trig blades from Pakistan for tonights shave , Proraso shave soap and the Merkur 38 razor . Good close shave but don't think they were as smooth as the Personna's or the Gillette Greenlabel 7 oclock ones that I like the best .

It's funny that you say that. I quit smoking cigarettes YEARS ago but I sometimes still have euphoric recall around the "calming" effect of smoking a cigarette. I think the mild tabacco scent of the Tabac soap triggers that recall for me. Kind of a tranquilizing effect.

Give me something with Sandalwood or Proraso with Menthol. Those are the type of scents I prefer.
