I have been getting to that mindset of late as well. I had to bury some family and watch that process, and am having my own health issues. I have to balance having a lot of stuff against how much I actually use it, and the fact that we can't take any of it with us. I got hit hard by theft about 15 years ago and lost the ones that I actually loved the most, and that is horrible. They weren't worth as much then, and I don't want to have it happen again.
So, with the senior housing bass in mind, I will eventually be down to my old EB-2. I have loved it for ages, have the most fun with it, and - lets face it - it is a lot easier to sell an old Fender. So over the next few years, I will pare down, and spread the love. I am being positive by hoping I have a next few years. In case I lose the memories, I will have some pictures.

You no longer own a split-coil P???
What are you... nuts? How could you do that? Are you feeling OK lately? How's your hearing? You better see a doctor or a shrink or something!
As far as I know, if you get rid of your split-coil P, you might as well get rid of all of 'em.
You'll be back. It's just a matter of time ;^)

I had my head examined. The result? It's mostly all there. But I know what you mean about not having a P around.
Truth is, the wide necks are starting to get to me. I looked in the mirror the other day and suddenly realized I'm not young anymore.
I'm counting on the Jazz bass neck I have extending my playing life.

"Extending my playing life" has to be what it's all about George. Practicality. I'd love a low-slung two-seat sports car, but can't get in them anymore!
It's just great to have owned and loved so many great bases, and who cares if there's a P tone or two your current bass doesn't quite manage. It's all in the fingers anyway, and a nice narrow neck sure helps! A jazz would be - and will eventually be - my choice too.
Enjoy!

If you find a P neck with a "B" width and the right profile, it won't be hard on your hands like the bigger C necks with the wide flat or baseball bat profiles.
Anther option if you have to go with the skinny neck is put an A neck on your P.
IMO, you just aint going to get that sweet P sound out of a Jazz. And sound is the most important part.
Sorry folks! For some reason, I didn't see Iconoclast A neck suggestion. But that is the way to go!

George, you'll be an inspirational bassist for many years to come - whether that's playing one jazz or a dozen precisions...

liverbird...how kind. You've made my day.
I'm inspired by the suggestions to think about a "B" neck. I do have an early 68 P neck, Brazil, transition, that is a B and has a wonderful profile. Now, if the right P were to come along...wouldn't have to be fancy...this neck could find a new place to hang out.
Oh no, I'm back at it again. No hope for an addict.
As for all my P friends, if you were to play this stack I have I think it would be easier for you to understand why I did what I did. It's quite a nice bass.

George, I fully understand. I love P's but the neck on a J is pure heavenly and it does have a variety of tones it can do.

Aren't J and P necks interchangeable? If you want a P but find the J neck easier to play, wouldn't a simple swap get you there? In fact, aren't there specific Fender issued P models with J necks?
C'mon George. You must have considered that! Fess up. Ya fell in love with the J-stacker and so the P's went begging. You got a taste of strange and "tonal lust" got the better of you. Yer not the the first guy, won't be the last. Can't blame you for that.
I actually find the wider P necks more comfortable to play. I have been tempted to go after a J bass for those tonal options and then do the opposite, swap out the neck for a nice wide P style. (interesting that AFAIK Fender has never offered a J model with a P neck. I guess the demand has been more for the other way around)

I believe George uses TI Jazz Flats and I have to say (after he talked me into it) they sounded better, no incredibly good on a Jazz I had. Liked them on the Jazz better even better than I did on a P. I have to say I really like the clear coated DR Silver Stars rounds on my Jazz. If I had a second Jazz I would put the TI's on them for that authentic early 60's smooth tone.

I'm sure that no matter what you play, you sound like yourself. Play what you like, like what you play.

Hey George, just buy a used '50 mexican P and change the nut for a
standard P one (B).
Very easy to do for $10. and you end up with a great sounding comfortable bass!
That's what I did and couldn't be happier!

paco...nice suggestion.
I'm currently getting my P-bass kicks on my backup bass, which I really do like and which I actually used on the gig the other night just to keep familiar with the slightly wider neck.
It's a Classic 50s Squire single-coil in delicious honey blonde and it does sound and play very well for the $300 bucks I paid for it, plus the cost of a SD Anqiquity II replacement pickup and an All Parts replacement harness.

Long time since posting here. But happened on your post George and like you I'm down to just a few ( three) basses now (Laklands) though I usually only play the same one at gigs. But I found myself getting that "itch" again and have started looking around in old haunts like FDP! At which point I think of all the lovely basses (including one of yours - that Fiesta Red Fullerton) that have passed through my hands.
