I'm getting some in a guitar that's being built. The ones I tried seem to be really great, and I've been able to sort of dictate what I want out of each p'up. Gonna be a few weeks, but I can't wait to hear 'em!

A friend who is a professional has them in his Nocaster Reissue. He swears by them and they sound great through his rig.

Yeah, I played a couple single coils of his that are amazingly expressive. My guitar will be H-S-H configuration, with the coils split at p'up selector positions 2 & 4. Gotta have humbuckers as I do a lot of recording, and I just can't have the hum, especially with the dirty power in my building.

I just worked on a friend's strat with a set in. I was very impressed. Very 'stratty', warm but not hot, very expressive as gdw3 said. Clarity and lots of harmonic content and character. Very like a CS54, my favourite strat pup, and I would have this particular Amalfitano set in one of my own strats without hesitation. These are a few years old, and my friend thinks they are possibly from a time when he only made one strat pup. I looked up his website, and I see he now has three types for strats.
Edit to add, pricey though.

Pricey, but not much more than Fralins or Lollars, and I'm getting a custom wind, so....
We'll see what happens. The guitar has begun being built, but will probably take 4 or 5 more weeks til it's done.

ooooh, finally got it today. Pickups are pretty nice so far. I'm surprised how much I like the bridge 'bucker. Will do a full description and review later in the week....

Upon further playing, I ended up lowering the pickups, especially the neck and middles ones. Much sweeter. The neck was a little harsh and unpleasant at my gig last week. Playing with the height made a big difference. I lowered it until it got too weak, and then brought it back up. Much nicer! Lowered the middle, too, to compensate. Now has a nice quack with either 'bucker, plus a real good strummy sound on its own.

The more I play 'em, the more I notice. My impression now is that they have a real "modern" sound. A lot of complexity in the midrange. I got this after pulling out my Les Paul with BurstBuckers. "Oh, yeah, that's what this sounds like!". Then going back to the Lipe with the Amalfitanos, it was definitely a different sound. Not a classic tone. Not bad, but I'm not 100% sold on them (yet), either.
I plan on playing them in practice this weekend with no pedals, just straight in. We'll see how they blend with other instruments....

Alright. I got to play it with some guys over the weekend. Overall, it sounded great! They were very impressed.
I did a lot of tweaking, messing with the height of the pups vs. the individual screws. Really improved. But I think the neck pickup is a little dark for my taste. Mike Lipe is actually going to see Mr. Amalfitano at the Dallas guitar show, who is going to give him a different magnet to try in the neck p'up for me. I'm hoping it makes it a little sweeter and more open. Right now, apparently it has an alnico 5 magnet, and he's going to try an alnico 3, I think. We'll see!
Here's a link to my thread about the guitar, with photos!

OK, so Mike did come back from Dallas with an Alnico 2 magnet for the neck pup. He switched it out over the weekend (I had withdrawls!), and I got it back yesterday. Much better! Now the 2 buckers are way more even, and I can have the neck pup higher up where it should be, and that brightened it up. Really sounds sweet now.
I did an initial recording, just a one-off wank fest to test the guitar and my new amp. Not a definitive test by any means, but you get an idea of the good tones this thing puts out.

Here's my first recording that uses only the Lipe w/ the Amalfitanos. It's taken me a while to get them dialed in, but the jury is still out as to whether I'm completely sold on them.....

Well, I've finally gotten these things dialed in. The Alnico 2 magnet was definitely the thing for the neck bucker. I was sort of the test subject, cuz now that's how Mike is configuring all his dual humbucker guitars. Shouldn't I get a piece of the action or something? :)
Moving on to the middle pickup. The humbuckers were wired to split their coils in positions 2 & 4, but I just could never feel comfortable in those positions. Just too quacky and thin. I tried lowering the middle pup, but that didn't help much, and made the middle too weak.
So I went back to Mike, and he undid the wiring for those positions. Now it is the full buckers with the middle. I raised the middle back up as far as possible, and found it was actually too much output! Good problem to have, so I lowered it a bit, and now it has a real nice jangly sound by itself, and just enough quack in 2 & 4.
So, YAY!!!! Finally got this thing where it sounds great in every position!
Thank you Mike Lipe and Jerry Amalfitano.
I have a new recording with the guitar in the Home Recording section. Enjoy.
