Here's what my worthless POS crappy '79 Antigua Strat looks like. In the condition it's in,I guess it wasn't really worth playing the 100's of gigs it did.I know she's ugly, but she's mine.LOL

I own two 70's both great, but I don't want to turn this in to a are 70's Fender guitars good or bad post. If he wants to trade an entry level guitar for a vintage Strat (Providing it's orginal)it would be a good trade for you.

P.S. BF that's a nice looking Strat

If its pretty beat up, the '79 is probably not worth more that $1000 to $1200.
Shouldn't the price of a guitar go down and not up?

Nah, they'll only go up. Look at what has happened with the Norlin-era Les Pauls - pancake body, 12+ lb. boat anchors with overly mineralized mahogany. You are lucky to find one under $3K. They are "vintage" to many players and a lot of good music was played on them.

You could change the words "Beat up" to Mojo, Flavor, vintage guitar should look like they have been played, if they didn't I would worry. As long as it is play wear and not abuse it will effect the value a little, but not as much as you would think. The most important thing with vintage guitars is are they all orginal or close.

It seems the OP has left the building ...
As I see it, why does a 23 year old need a vintage collectable, assuming this guitar qualifies as that? If he gets it in his head that it has value as a collectible he may not play it.
At his age, he is much better off buying a brand new guitar which, IMO, is at least as good as anything Fender made in the 70s.
If he buys new now, by the time he is the average age of most of us on the FDP, he will still have his "vintage" guitar.
