How do you guys play your backing tracks loud enough so your Amp does not drown them out?

ipod into powered computer speakers sitting on a small stand next to my "guitar corner" where the amps sit.

Amp is not very loud.

If I want loud, then it's ipod into stereo system. Which is in the same room.

I have powered computer speakers, but if I crank my amp up I can't here the tracks, I have to play low.

I thought about getting a monitor speaker for my computer. Studios using Mac's must be doing something the same?

"I thought about getting a monitor speaker for my computer."

I would think it would have to have an amp (internal?) to power it. I wouldn't think a computer line out would have enough power to drive the speaker.

I'll just do more research, it's probably a lot easier than I'm thinking!

I have a Demeter Silent Speaker Chamber--it's not silent, but it's totally enclosed and it cuts the volume WAAAAY down. I usually use a POD, but if I do go live I use the Demeter SSC.

But if I didn't have that, you just gotta put the amp outside the room if you want to play it loud. Put it in a closet, put a blanket over it w/the mic under the blanket, etc.

If it's a tube amp, make sure to allow ventilation if you're gonna cover it and play it for more than 10 or 20 minutes. You may cook some guts!

What Peegoo said! If it's a head-cab, cover the cab, leave the head exposed. I forgot about those pesky combo amps, I'm such a head/cab guy!

Backing tracks through PA speakers. Before that I used to use a set of larger HiFi speaker with a sub-woofer. You need that low end thump for drums.

I put together my perfect setup. Got a set of Rokit 5 monitors and a M-Audio Pre USB preamp. This replaces your sound card. The M-Audio plugs into a USB port, done! That setup puts out so much power it's almost louder than my DRRI. And now I'm setup to build a home recording studio.

How about converting your backing tracks to MP3 and stick 'em on an iPod. Run the iPod into an AUX stereo input on your stereo/home theater audio system. Keep the iPod volume around 25% to prevent overdriving the preamp on the component audio system, and use the system volume as the master..

Actually I've done sort of that. All tracks are in my iTunes on my Mac. I bought an Airport Express, plugged the cables into my Stereo AV and set iTunes to stream wireless to my Airport. Works awesome, downstairs where my AV setup is. The rig I have now is for my little man cave upstairs. All bases covered :-)
