Like this (I never tried it, it's just the result of a Google search).

I'm a bit ticked off at Apple support right now. They assured me prior to my purchasing my wife's iPad that I would be able to print wirelessly to my networked non-AirPrint printer using a third party app.
As it turns out that means you have to do everything - surf, email, whatever - through the third party app's dialog, and then you still need to do a bunch of extra steps to print.
Has anyone here with an iPad that doesn't have an AirPrint printer been able to figure out how to print? I'm about one headache away from returning this thing and buying an Android tablet.
(Edit - typo)

Do you have a computer on the same network that is always on? There seem to be some workarounds using Windows/OSX.

I looked into this some more. I have the link for the MacOS AirPrint Activator below. I have not tried this, but I will when I get home tonight. Looks very simple. Turns your Mac into a virtual AirPrint printer that iOS can access.

insanecooker - that's a good lead, thanks. I'm trying to use a commercial product (FingerPrint) that works in a similar fashion, I'll try the one you linked if the commercial one won't work.
Spin - I'm not running a Mac so that won't work.
I think in any case I'll need to leave the PC running to serve as a print server. Not happy about that...

This is an interesting topic.
Does an android device print wirelessly without any problems?

fendrguitplayr, my currently produced and sold printer isn't supported by that app. I've expressed my displeasure to Brother.
damuniz, I've heard from several people that Android tablets have their own kind of hell when it comes to printing and networking.
FingerPrint is doing the trick, but I need to have the desktop PC fired up so it can work as a print server. Next step is to recycle her old netbook to do the same thing so I can sleep the desktop.

I have an iPad2 which I use for writing. I e-mail my completed documents to myself at my PC address and then print out everything on my Brother laser printer.
(when I bought the iPad I assumed I would be able to print wirelessly on my home system, but I gave up on that idea pretty quickly once I read of all the quirks and dissatisfaction with 3rd party apps)

Gato, I'm trying to rig this so SWMBO can print when I'm not home. (The office where the desktop is located isn't very accessible for her wheelchair, but the printer is out in the fambly room.)
This FingerPrint app is working very well with our Brother laser. You may want to give it a try!

Not sayin' this will help at all, but this is what does work regarding printing with my iPad2. I'm a little confused regarding what is where in your house, office etc, and distance, but anyway here goes.
I wanted to print using my iPad2 when I got it last fall. There is no computer involved here. (that's also where I get slightly confused in regard to what you are trying to do.) I went with an Epson printer because software designers associated with Epson designed a program specifically to work with their printers and the iPad2. The App is called Printjinni, and it tends to work very well if other things are not too complicated. It will print documents if their URL is of a standard type, i.e. html, .com, jpeg, etc, about a dozen of the very common ones. I know this probably doesn't help because you probably don't want to replace your Brother printer, a good one I'm sure. Frankly, I have forgotten exactly how much my Epson Artisan 835 was, but it certainly didn't break me.
Also, I forgot to mention, my iPad2 and the Epson Artisan printer are both working off the same WiFi router, which BTW runs some other equipment. But, I can't print out of proximity using my iPad2. I have to be in the same WiFi area. But that is a pretty big area--it's quite a bit larger area than my two bedroom apartment.
I feel returning the iPad and going android is a mistake. As long as things are not too complicated, I can print quite a lot of documents using just my iPad2 and my Epson. Perfect for one somewhat immobile or in a WC.
To give you an example, HeavyDuty, I had to look up some California Labor Laws a while ago which were on different lawyers websites. The iPad2 through Printjinni printed fine, I printed very easily and straightforwardly a hundred pages or so of info over about a week.
If you have any more specific questions, I would be happy to try and answer them.

Tall-Fir, thanks for the info. Your Epson is one of the ones with built-in support for AirPrint. Sadly the iPad won't print directly to a non-AirPrint equipped printer over Wi-Fi - you need to either run everything through an iApp (sucky) or use a PC or Mac as a print server (less sucky).

So, most importantly, where does that ultimately leave you, HD?

Yep - FingerPrint is doing the job so far. I may move it over to her old netbook and leave that on all the time instead of the desktop.

Update - FingerPrint quit working once we updated her iPad and my iPhone to iOS6.
There's a new version of FingerPrint that resolves the issue, and they're offering at a deep discount to current FingerPrint owners. The app is nicer, so I don't begrudge them the additional cost.

Do you have a link?
I just tried getting FingerPrint2 to work and none of my IOS devices are finding the printer, even after searching the RFC's for Apple specific printing ports and poking those holes in my firewall.
(Which shouldn't have been necessary since they're all on the same network as the PC with the printer shared.)
I've been cursing this proprietary Apple crap for a couple of hours now.

FingerPrint 2 it is. I was lucky, it installed right on top of my existing FingerPrint with no issues. My printer is plugged directly into my UVerse RG and my PC network is all wireless to the RG.
