OK

Changed the grill cloth.
Replaced the tone stack with a .022mFd cap.
Amp sounds great except that the little speaker farts out when pushed. This is OK sometimes but other times I don't like it.I decided I want an 8" speaker that breaks up when pushed but doesn't just fart and die. Choices? I am leaning towards the Weber Sig line - maybe 8" alnico? Thoughts?
Thanks.

hi pappa ray!

i´ve tried a couple of 8" speakers in my own "600" and it´s an ongoing experiment ;)

the weber signature is a good choice, but i think the "alnico s" i have is too mellow overall - just doesn´t have enough "cut".
i would think a ceramic model might be the way to go. unfortunately, they´re too expensive to try them out here in europe.
got the alnico model years ago when shipping from the US wasn´t as expensive as it is now...

i also tried a vintage jensen C8R which was nice, but lacked a little low-end.

the current jensen C8R ain´t bad, but is hard to make it fit the transformer...

i also tried an old Oxford alnico from an sf champ and it´s really nice. again, not a lot of low end, but plenty of chime and crunch when pushed.

looking forward to try whatever comes next ;-)

cheers - C.

Well
I ordered the Weber Sig 8S with ribbed cone (always makes me think of the Trojan ad, lol).
It will take 2-3 weeks for them to make and ship it so in about a month, I'll report back.

You're gonna love that speaker. I have these in both my vintage Champs and they maintain their punchy crispness even with the amp dimed.

Hmmmmmm....

Maybe I should order a Weber Sig 8S for my Champ 600....I assume I'd need to also replace the baffle board, too, right??,..... and as long as I'm doing that, also replace the grill cloth?

I love my Champ 600 but I think a couple of tweaks just might do the trick.....especially since the stock 6' just doesn't cut it....

I recently replaced the stock speaker on my Blues DeLuxe Reissue, and it GREATLY tweaked the tone....and big time, too!

hi RainboGuy!

yes, you´d need a new baffle - i think they´re even available pre-manufactured nowadays...

an 8" speaker greatly enhances the volume and overall fullness of the amp´s sound.
sounds much more like a "real" amp.

i do like the "chime" of the stock speaker at low volume, though, and i found it´s not so easy to find an 8" that´s bright enough for me ;)

cheers - C.

I have a Weber Signature 8 ceramic in mine. It is a great sounding speaker.

hi twangmeister!

that´s good to hear!

i started recommending the ceramic signature-speakers as i think the alnico sig-s i have is a bit too mellow-sounding, and i was guessing the ceramics might have a little more hi-end.

cheers - C.

Hi all,
I had experiencing various speakers as well.
I personally like vintage P8R reconed and vintage C8R.
C8R is great yet little weak. my new Weber Alnico Sig was Wasnt as sweet as I thought.
New P8R didn't fit and my current choice is vintage P8R.
Weber Ceramic Sig, I never tried.

My Weber sig 8" with ribbed cone came in. So tomorrow I'm cutting a new baffle from a piece of solid wood Ikea shelf I have around and try it out.

All installed. You have to use 3/8 ply so the amp chassis will slide all the way in. The chassis hits the speaker rim but it all ended up fitting - just. Sounds really really nice. I like the fact the speaker breaks up later. The amp is so raw (I've replaced the tone stack with a 022 cap)it sure doesn't need the speaker breaking up. And the speaker has yet to be broken in.

I'm using a GT 6V6 that came in my DRRI. I swapped them out fairly quickly.
