i've come to the conclusion that an SG is the best hard rock guitar out there. for overdriven tones that is. i had one and sold it cause i did not like the clean sound. but i am missing the overdriven to distorted tone(s).
i had what they now call satin 61 ri. i'm going to look for an SG standard.
what are your thoughts on SG's

SGs are great for hard rock guitar tones, but so are Les Pauls and Flying Vs.
"Super Strats" get the job done nicely too. (:oD

I like my SG Standard an awful lot. It's my main guitar right now. Best bang for the buck in the Gibby line up IMO.

Definitely a top contender!
If I had space in the house or budget, I would get one of those 61 re-issue things (or was it 62?) with the neck that was like 4 yards long

I've never been able to bond with the SG. The neck heavy feel turns me off. Great access to the upper fret however. I still prefer the LP.

SG- The greatest Hard rock guitar of all times.
I’m certainly not going to take that away from somebody, who am I to judge.
In fact I had a couple good friends, great SG Players, sounded good too.
Its just personal preference. Had one, sold it. Too many controls (4) in a small area for me, felt cramped. The body seemed too thin. I kind of like a heavier feeling guitar, referring to a non-vibrato model SG. Although a mahoganogy body with some good Gibson pups does sound good, I think that’s a fact.

The 61 RI is the Gibson deal of the century. One of the best they've ever done.

How is a 61 RI so much better than a standard?

If you want a SG that can still bring the rock, but has better cleans, get one with P90s. My '64 SG Jr and SG Classic can handle anything from blues to Brit pop to early metal. I've got a '61 RI as well, but the two with the P90s get the lion's share of playing time.
And speaking of deals, the SG Classic is truly one of the best ones out there in the Gibson lineup.

"How is a 61 RI so much better than a standard?"
Pickups aside (which are personal preference on guitars at this level), I'd also like to know why this is true?
(I'm waiting on a lefty SG Standard ordered a few weeks ago...I won't be afraid to change the pickups if needed.)

Great hard rock guitar, great guitar. I really enjoy my Gibson SG Standard. When I play a Gibson, I play the SG as much as my ES and LP combined, it just works out that way...

I'm not much of a Gibson guy (as far as playing them), but one listen to The Who's "Live At Leeds" should be enough to convince anyone of the SG's worth as a ROCK tone machine.

I've got a late model SG Standard that I really like. I swapped the pickups for the '57 Classic/Classic + setup, but really the stock pickups (490R/498T) are good too. They are a little hotter than the '57's, so it just depends on what you want. I was going for more of a 60's to 70's classic rock tone, so the '57 Classics work great for me.
I haven't had any issues at all with the neck heaviness that some report. I do have a suede leather Levy's strap on it, so that probably helps.
The neck profile is a little on the beefy side, which I like. I know that's one difference between the Standard and the '61 Reissue (along with the stock pickups - '57 Classics in the '61 RI).
Gibson is currently offering the SG Standard Limited, basically some extra colors beyond the routine Heritage Cherry or Ebony.

I've never liked them all that well. I prefer the tone and especially the feel of a Les Paul. I prefer a good Jackson type super strat over an SG.

I've had 3: a 61 Re-Issue, a Classic, and my latest, a 2009 SG Standard.
Personally, overall, I think the Gibson Sg Standard is THE Value in the entire Gibson Line-Up.
I tried 7 different ones at 4 guitar stores before I bought the 2009 SG Standard...knowing that I was going to tweak it with new, upgraded parts.
And I did.
I replaced the stock tuners with Tone/Pros Klusons: They're 18:1 and the gearing is super tight....smooth and superb..
Replaced the pickups with a 57 Classic in the neck and a 57 Classic Plus in the bridge...
Added a new bone nut, cut professionally by a local luthier..
Replaced the stock bridge with a TonePros locking bridge...
And replaced the tailpiece with a TonePros locking tailpiece...
Now that guitar has MY feel and tone...and it's sooooo incredibly versatile....everything from classic rock to jazz and blues.....
What a great guitar!!!

one thing i love about the standard over the 61 ri is the neck is a bit beefier than the 61ri.
the 57 classic pick ups are great. but i have to say... the utube demos i've head on the standard sound great!
and yes a good Lss Paul is pretty amazing too. but there is just something about the tone of an SG that is so nasty and it screams rock!
will the P90's still get "that" SG sound?

yellowrubberduck:
Yes, they will....you should try and play an SG Classic and see if you like it...
The P90's in an SG add a bit of clarity and "edge" to an SG....but the all-mahogony body and neck keeps it nice and warm.
And....there's something very interesting about the tone of an SG with single-coils VS. Humbuckers...
Consider the P90's as "Another tonal option to add to the pallette"...
And as a plus, Classics cost a bit less than a Standard.
Having said that, the necks on the Standards are just beautiful.....
