I bought a set of "Short Scale" D'Addario XL Chromes Flatwounds for my '68 Coronado Bass II.

They're too short by about an inch. The ribbon actually crosses over the nut.

From the trapeze to the nut is almost 34".

What, exactly, do I need here?

The "problem" with some basses -- old hollow bodies in particular -- is that the scale length (saddle to nut) is indeed 30" (short scale) or 32" (medium scale; some old Guilds, IIRC). BUT -- as you've seen -- the location of the tailpiece can require you to use a string designed for a standard 34" scale electric bass. I seem to recall that there is a manufacturer who makes 32" scale strings (Alembic?), but first try to string it with a spare of old 34" scale strings. I'll bet they'd work just fine.

I called D'Addario, gave the tech my measurements, and he said go Long scale.

And then he said he'd send me a set free of charge!

I was speechless.

He said that I'd already bought their product, and it wasn't right, so they were gonna make it right.

This NEVER happens to me.

That kind of treatment is reserved exclusivley for bass players. We're pretty quiet about it, for good reason.

Their upright bass strings are far and away the best I have ever used, sad to say that in 35 years I've never used their electric bass strings.

D'Addario is a stand-up company that has long made great strings; they're my go-to for guitar, on my basses, Chromes get equal time with my TI and Sadowsky flats, and their nickel XL170s are the only rounds I like for bass.
