FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Stratocasters / Straight line finish checking on stratocaster?

I was looking at pictures of a stratocaster yesterday that had finish checking that ran in straight lines that went from one side of the bout to the other. This was on both front and back.
Is this normal???
I was under the impression that finish checking didn't run in straight lines. I don' t know much about weather/finish checking so any help would be appreciated. :)
Also, I'm considering buying this guitar which is why I could use the help.
Thanks
:)

I'm sorry, but I'm using an IPad and it won't download the photos.
The guitar is listed at wildwood guitars as a new arrival. It's a 56 RI. The checking is very apparent.

Those are pretty weird. That said, Wildwood is an excellent and honest dealer. I wouldn't hesitate to ask them about it.

Probably plays a good version of "Street Fightin' Man."

If I had to make a SWAG (Scientific Wild A**ed Guess) at this, I would ask if it were dropped straight down on the end. Look for damage or a dent around the strap button. It is the fissure that runs from the jack plate to the bridge that makes me think that.
Truly mysterious..

Could this be a botched attempt at relicing? I've seen lines that run from the bout to the horn, but not from one end of the bout across to the other.

Is it possible they mistook "NOS" for "Closet Classic"? I've seen guitars with minimal checking like that, but they are usually not labeled as having the NOS treatment from Fender. Usually it's the Closet Classic ones.
FWIW, I believe I have seen other guitars (new and vintage) with similar checking. It doesn't always happen all at once.

After doing some investigating, I found out that it had a 9.5 radius and 6105 frets. I' m looking for a 7.25 radius with vintage frets, so my interest just evaporated. After starting my search for a '56 RI I feel like I'm the only person who wants vintage specs instead of a more modern feel. The more modern specs seem to be everywhere.

Jon S:
FWIW, straight-line finish checking is a fairly common thing you will see in many high-end Nitrocellulose-Finished guitars, especially if they've been played a bit over the years.
My 2006 Vintage Sunburst Eric Johnson Strat started checking right after it's first winter here in Wisconsin, and my '96 '52 Telecaster has checking in it, too and it looks beautiful....
Many of us believe that checking (as well as other natural aging in guitars) adds to their mojo and beauty.
A local Music dealer here has a real nice used Fender custom-shop '65 Strat in Lake Placid Blue for $2,500.00
Yep, it's finish is checked and it looks SWEET.

I've got a '56 Closet Classic I scored used of Ebay that was semi-reliced like that. Not very realistic in my experience with vintage Strats, but it's nice guitar regardless.

That looks exactly like the real checking on my 05' nos 56' strat....although I have a lot more of it. I teach and always haul the guitar to work in the bed of my truck...I think it was a 10degree day I first noticed it had checked. The first few years it looked just like the wildwood guitar's checking. The interesting thing is the way the finish is on my guitar...it's like for part of it, only one layer of finish checked. Some of the year some of them will close up so much you can't see them. So the checking looks different all the time depending on humidity or temp.
