The Ashdown I tried to buy on Craigslist was sold before I got to it. I just remembered that I have an old 1980's Peavey PA head. I also have an old Traynor speaker cab with a 15 loaded. I think I might try that and see how it works in my basement. Any opinions?

sounds like a good place to start. I've heard of people using Fender valve P.A heads for guitar and bass amps. I've worked on stages with all sorts of wacky gear (although I draw the line at people using HiFi gear - unless Bob Carver made it, of course)

An old PV head, like an XR600 is 300 watts into two ohms. Into an 8 ohm cabinet would only produce around 100 watts. Filter caps can dry out in these amps too, which reduces headroom even though the amp may still work.

A 4 ohm cab would yield 210 watts, if it's an XR600.

It's a much lower end PA head. SS/4 channel. I'm pretty sure it's looking for 8 ohms.

Really pleased with my recently purchased 500W Orange Terror Bass amp. Tried it against an Ashdown, Portaflex PF350 and several others through that neat 600W Orange 2 x 12 (one speaker behind the other?!) cabinet and there was no contest.

Be careful though, this Class 'D' (I believe) 'switching' amp puts out 500W into both 4 and 8 ohms apparently.

Got £100.00 off the amp and a Speakon thrown in for some transit damage on the amp too (5 minute repair job with a hide mallet and some Toyota Supra White touch-in)....

The old 4 channel was 100 watts into 4 ohms. I have one myself.

That sounds about right Steve. I went downstairs and looked for it but didn't find it right away. I probably packed it away somewhere for safe keeping. I likely put it in a place where I wouldn't forget where I put it. Bad mistake. I always forget!

Ok. We have a winner. The Peavey is a Series III, MP-4, 4-channel PA head marked 50 watts into 8 ohms on the back. The Traynor 15" is an old combo that I removed the chassis, (2 EL-34's) to make a guitar head out of. My nephew still uses it in his band for bass & guitar. It's a work horse! Anyway, the speaker part of the combo is sealed with a jack where the chassis used to plug in. I took the old Peavey PA head and plugged into the old cabinet and WOW! That sucker can get loud and is a real thumper of a combination! All I need to do is clean it up a bit and it'll do the job I need it to do in the basement all without spending another dime.

The Peavey as it turns out, was 1st built in 1981 and this one is a pretty early example. The MP-4+ took over at some point. So, it's likely an 80's mixer. The Traynor is mid to late 60's. The Peavey chassis would easily fit in the Traynor if I want to button it up later but I won't likely do that.

Uhh, sorry I am late to the party. I would have told you to "go for it"...

As I recall, this is a "basement and jam bass rig" right? It will serve you well. If I had to haul it to regular jams or gigs, I would be screaming about my back...but "semi permanent" at home, it will blow you out of the basement into the path of a tornado....

I have seen lots of "budget bass players" using small, old, 4 channel powered mixers into bass cabinets. Lots of time. Relax, enjoy...(sounds like a soft drink commercial.)

Jhawkr,

That Traynor was probably a YBA1 bass amp. Yeah 2 El84s for bass sounds weird these days. Couple of the folks doing jams around here use them as guitar amps at the jams. Good solid bottom end from that 1x15 cab, and not very heavy.

The YBA1 was a 50 watt Head with 2 EL34s. YBA4 - somewhat rare was that head on a 1x15 combo cab. I think it was a YBA2 that was a smallish taller than wide 2xEL34 practice amp.

Both YBA1/4 and YBA2 make great guitar amps. My first band at 14 rented that Pracitice amp for bass while I used a YGM3. Morgantown WV had OB Fawley's music store who would rent that bass amp for $15 per mo. Or we would rent A YBA1 w 1x15 cab and YGL3 Twin copy and a PA w 2-4x12 columns and a mic for $40 a night. Yeah I had way to much guitar amp for the mix.

Congrats on your free rig ! SOUnds cool !
