New nut? Looks like a pre-fab Fender replacement nut that hasn't had final shaping/smoothing.
Refret? Frets seem to be in better shape than the body wear would indicate; maybe a life under a soft touch and flats, but maybe refretted at some point? Hard to tell from pics.

I'd be all over this if only the strap were included in the sale. That's a deal breaker for me!

There's around a year between the neck and body dates.

USK, I noticed that.
Maybe built from parts, maybe just using stuff on hand that had set around.
Either way is OK by me.
I love the way old tort looks on sunburst.

I think your second senerio is more plausable.
They probably built too many bodies then had to catch up when they built more necks.

To much black for me on those early burst.
I prefer the later "sunny" with a lot a yellow from around '65

"The border is actually a Dark Brown!"
The early three tone sunbursts were done w/ the on hand brown. Good eye. Eventually they made the switch to black as the outer color on a three color sunburst.

The stuff of dreams for me unfortunately, I can only drool on the keyboard while looking at it. Mind you, still thoroughly enjoying the growl I am getting from the sunburst 68 I recently acquired. Wonder what the reserve is?

Neck has replacement nut. The decal does not feature the "Pat. Pend." wording of the earlist stack decals. With a body date of 10-60, it should have this decal. Therefore, IMO, the neck featured with this bass is a replacement neck done who knows when.
The black that's really brown in the burst is standard for sunbursts in 59 and 60. My Dec. 59 Precision has the brown. Quite stunning when seen in person.
Never say never.

By the way, I just spent two years working with a 1960 stack, all original pickups and harness. Mine sounded like nothing else Fender ever made, truly an extraordinary instrument when heard live and at volume. Stunning cut-through-the-mix tone, with big warmth and a character to the sound you have to hear in person to really appreciate. IMO, these earliest Jazz basses are probably the best electric basses of any kind Leo Fender ever made.

In the fifties, when the sunburst offerred as standard was a two tone, the dark shading was constituted from two shades of brown.
The first was called salem maple, the second, much darker, was called salem maple dark.
This salem maple dark was a deep brownish blackish shade. When red was introduced into the scheme,to give the three tone sunburst, the dark edge shading was still done with the salem maple dark.By the end of '61 on, black was used to achieve the dark shading, as has been pointed out. It is worth noting as well, that the clear coats applied over all these sunbursts would age and yellow quite quickly, and the effect of that was to give the black edge shading an olive brownish look to a certain extent.

The bass is probably a parts bass, meaning the BIN was reasonable. It looks like a good player, however the date discrepancy causes the instrument to lose much of its investment/collector appeal.

maybe I read it wrong? confused the digits as it converted it from US$ to Au$?
But I thought it was cheap, under $10k, when I followed the link on the very first post. There's no reserve so it could have quite easily gone for $1.
Doesn't matter now, the market will pay what the market can afford.

You say this with a past tense. You haven't let that stacker go, have you?
