We had the hit but Van got the money

The Clark clone is about as good as a clone gets. The Fender '57 is not to be dismissed, either. Pretty sure they're out of production now, replaced by the Clapton signature tweed Tremolux. Not really a reissue.

One of the best amps I've ver heard was a '59 Deluxe I scored for $75 in 1970. Looked like it had just come out of its shipping box. One of those "shouda 'kep it" pieces I can never replace.

I'm going to give them a call this morning about the amp. What are your volume experiences with these? The max volume I've really run my CVR at is 5.5 or 6 (which isn't all that much louder than 4 or so, just dirtier). If volume is a serious issue, I don't mind the looks of the Bassman. :-D

It's hard to gauge in the store because the acoustics are so different from room to room.

Hold was removed. New one added. :D

I have some time today to go in so I'll give it a go against the Bassman. I have a feeling I know which one is going to win.

Great! Remember the 57 Deluxe is not made anymore. You can always buy a Bassman later.

New amp day! Weird - the amp has a GT, Fender-labeled 12AT7 in V1, which might be a compromise between the 12AY7 and the 12AX7.

Did Fender ever do this from the factory? I thought it was always a 12AX7 on the RIs.

Also, the label inside is peeling off a bit. Not a big worry, but what kind of adhesive do they use on these?

This amp I believe will make a lot of room because there are several things going out the door for it. I want the net cost at $0.

No, Fender used 12AX7 in V1. The label can be re-glued using rubber cement.

gdw3, it's not on Fender's website so I'd bet those are NOS.

Thanks for the tips on the tubes and glue. If both AXs and AYs are safe, I assume the AT is fine. Anyone have any opinions about leaving it in there?

I don't get it. Everyone on this board is saying that the Deluxe reissue is a real winner. At the price, Fender should have been making some money on it. Why discontinue the amp? It can't be that the amp was priced to high to sell. Look at what Fender is asking for the Eric Clapton Tremolux.

What is the deal? Lately Fender has been introducing a fair amount of geat that seems to get discontinued fairly quickly.

It probably hit the chopping block to make way for the whole line of EC amps. Fender seems to have made a short run of Champs, Deluxes, and Twins. Because anything with EC's name or initials attached seems to sell well, maybe they made a decision to revamp the whole line.

It's all speculation for me, though.

Fender may have discontinued the 5E3 because there are plenty of clones that can be had for less. While I have a Clark and think it's among the best clones out there, I've heard other less expensive clones that come very, very close.

Congrats Brent!
Now fire that puppy up and enjoy, mine lasted 50 odd years, so I'm sure you'll get your money's worth.

Between Ski and Brent's theories there's enough motivation for Fender to discontinue them, but as you say only they know for sure why.

The new EC version of the 57 lineup have more features and are priced exactly the same as the plain line of 57 amps. I can see why they discontinued the old line.

Although highly revered, the classic Tweed amps are rather specialist. Apart from the Twin and Bassman, maybe even less flexible live. However, although 5e3 clones can be had from several sources none are cheap mind you. The Twin clones/kits are less plentiful and other notable comparable-spec makes such as Cornell and Victoria are in same price park as Fender.

To me, there is something rather cynical about the EC lineup that would deter me - I do not like 3rd party endorsements emblazoned all over my gear either! I like the classic look and vibe.

A little bit of reading said the 12AT was a bad pick for V1, so I picked up a 12AY today. I thought the amp sounded good before!

Didn't get much of a chance to crank it in the apartment, but will do so soon. I love this amp!

Cisco is right, these come from the factory with 12ax7's in v1. But I believe the original amps came with 12ay7's. Fender does recommend ay7's for a lower gain sound. I can't recall if the at7 has more or less gain than the ay7. Usually the at7 is used for the phase inverter. I tested several different tubes other than ax7's - ay7, at7, 5751. I was doing this because I wanted a little more control over the volume. I found the ax7 to be a little too aggressive for my taste. The ay7 was the cleanest, and gave the most (perceived) clean headroom. Next was the 5751, a great compromise between higher and lower gain. I really didn't like the tone of the at7 in v1. That all being said, the ax7 is perfectly fine, was just trying to lower the amp's overall "aggressiveness" a little.

Anyway, congrats on your purchase. This is just a great little amp.
