And I think I'm in love! I went to check out a guitar and played it through a Clark Beaufort that had an attenuator built in and a reverb pan added. Then I tried the Fender without any of that stuff, and thought it sounded great clean. Asked a store employee about it and he cranked it up while I stood back a bit to get a feel for it. The thing roared.

Expensive, but very tempting. It's on hold, and if the guy with the hold doesn't buy it I think I am going to have to sell a few things.

Thoughts?

The 57 Deluxe is in a class of its own and is one of Fenders most coveted amps. The natural harmonic distortion is classic.

The RI starts sounding even better as the speaker breaks in. They are very loud for their size and wattage too, and easy to carry. I friggin love mine.

I paid Aus$4000.00 for mine at a time when the exchange rate for Australia was not in our favour. I have no regrets.

Yeah, if this one comes up it will probably require the sale of at least two other amps. But it's gorgeous. If the guy who has it on hold buys it, I might break down and try out the Bassman LTD they've got. It's not exactly the same, but it's a tweed circuit with pine and lacquer, and it *is* $400 cheaper.

Oh, I don't blame you *that* much. I blame myself for getting involved enough over there to listen to the 5112 samples. I blame myself for going to look at that guitar that I really don't need. I blame myself for hanging around long enough to try the Deluxe.

But mostly, I blame Fender for making such a dang cool amp. Oh, and it's really expensive, too.

The price doesn't change the roar, though.

...now you will have to learn to play differently too! Tweeds are a different beast to modern amps!

I've got a vintage '59 deluxe (I bought back in the 60's) that is one of my "goto" amps, but I've tried the 57 deluxe out at a store. Believe me if I didn't already own one I'd have no problem what so ever laying my money down, if I could afford one.

How much did the guy want for the Clark?

It's at a shop. I think both are consigned. The Clark is $1400 and the Deluxe is $1300.

Happiness is a warm tube amp

That's a decent price for that amp. They were $1700-$1800 or so new, IIRC.

I've got one that I really like. I bought it used, and did have to "tweak" it a little to make it right. One of the front panel edges didn't get enough lacquer at the factory and it stood out like a sore thumb when compared to the rest of the cabinet. I fixed that and now it looks great.

Also, I had some cabinet rattle issues that I had to fix. It didn't rattle when I first got it, they developed over time. I had to put some dampers between the inside of the upper back panel and the chassis in three or four spots.

I also swapped out the stock Jensen for a Celestion Blue. There was nothing wrong with the Jensen, but I wanted to give the amp more volume so I could gig with it. It was getting drowned out with the Jensen in it.

It's a great little tweed amp. Light, portable, classic looks, and roars like a lion. When I'm playing out with it, I usually crank it and adjust the volume with my guitar.

Join the Tweed Deluxe club, BrentD! The 5E3 is where it's at!!! I got my Clark Beaufort several years ago and it's by far the best amp I've ever had. Never fails to garner a lot of interest at gigs.

Best sounding amp I ever had. It's only 12 watts, only 25 lbs, no frills, and it just rules. It is a bit pricey, but you get over that after a short while.

I'm not quite as keen on the Bassman, although it's a pretty good amp. I just don't think it's in the same league as the Deluxe, in terms of sound. If you were going for more power with similar sound quality, you might look at the 57 twin. The problem is that these tweed reissue amps are getting very pricey. I wonder if the non-Fender varieties would be good alternatives to save some money. When I bought mine Victoria was a good option - I think it was about $300 less at the time. I don't know much about Clark or Marsh or the others.

I played a Clark 5E3 and it was a very nice amp, true to the original design. It was at a jam session, not a store, and I didn't have a chance to discuss prices.

The Clark clone is about as good as a clone gets. The Fender '57 is not to be dismissed, either. Pretty sure they're out of production now, replaced by the Clapton signature tweed Tremolux. Not really a reissue.

One of the best amps I've ver heard was a '59 Deluxe I scored for $75 in 1970. Looked like it had just come out of its shipping box. One of those "shouda 'kep it" pieces I can never replace.

I'm going to give them a call this morning about the amp. What are your volume experiences with these? The max volume I've really run my CVR at is 5.5 or 6 (which isn't all that much louder than 4 or so, just dirtier). If volume is a serious issue, I don't mind the looks of the Bassman. :-D

It's hard to gauge in the store because the acoustics are so different from room to room.

Hold was removed. New one added. :D

I have some time today to go in so I'll give it a go against the Bassman. I have a feeling I know which one is going to win.

Great! Remember the 57 Deluxe is not made anymore. You can always buy a Bassman later.

New amp day! Weird - the amp has a GT, Fender-labeled 12AT7 in V1, which might be a compromise between the 12AY7 and the 12AX7.

Did Fender ever do this from the factory? I thought it was always a 12AX7 on the RIs.

Also, the label inside is peeling off a bit. Not a big worry, but what kind of adhesive do they use on these?

This amp I believe will make a lot of room because there are several things going out the door for it. I want the net cost at $0.

No, Fender used 12AX7 in V1. The label can be re-glued using rubber cement.
