I've only used the .22 shot in a Taurus revolver, mostly for pack rats, and it'll kill 'em deader than dead. .38 seems like overkill for snakes and such.

Do they still have lead shot out there? I'd be afraid of steel shot coming back at close ranges.

They work great from a short barrel, but I have no experience with them in any barrel longer than 2-1/2".

I have used it -also called bird shot for a .22 - and have had no problems with the pattern in a 4" bbl Ruger Security Six for .38 or .22 in a Colt Sa New Frontier .22 with a 5.5" bbl.

Smallest handgun I have and I don't want to lug a rifle on a hike.

Most snakes, yes. Copperheads are notoriously aggressive.

If you're going for a walk in the woods, 38spl should do nicely. I don't think I'd carry a pistol loaded with snake shot, because you still have to aim as close range. There's not much of a spread of the pellets until you get out past 20 yards or so...which is plenty of room to avoid a snake.

"You can out run it, no?"
No. I have three plates and ten screws in my neck that do not tolerate the impact of running. Also, my heart is regulated down. In hot conditions out on a hike, a quick dash could render me unconscious for lack of oxygen. In addition to that, if you see one, there are more. Running could set you onto another without warning.

De ville - Nice!
It's a .22 mag. I'm wondering if shot rounds would be enough to energize the mechanism.

How about a Taurus Judge? A pistol with 410 birdshot, 5 shots, that should work.

Most of the Punditry recommend skipping the shot rounds and sticking with your favorite bulleted load.
You can stand back farther and they do more damage. just aim where they're biggest. The shot loads mean you have to get closer for any kind of penetration.
I've tried .22 shot on a couple of large Rattlers. All it did was piss them off. One needed a REAL shot round (20 ga). After point blank hits with 3 of the shotties. The other settled for a couple of LRHP's that did the trick.

Used 38 and 44 as described.
And no, it won't cycle a semiautomatic unless you do something surreal like buy a case of 9mm shot, cut the recoil springs down, and swiss cheese a bolt on something FA openbolt that will eat them.

A Copperhead has about an 8" strike range at best... if you didn't see it and got that close, you can't pull a pistol out fast enough to stop a bite if it wants to, you can shoot it after it bites you.
