I've been flip-flopping over 2 weeks on this.
I really love the new '57 Am RI in CAR and have always wanted one in that colour ...BUT ...I really wanted a vintage spec neck with 22 frets like the CIJ '54 RI neck I put on a MIM std. I love that neck.
I can get a 2011 mint Hot Rod '57 body with bridge and trem for $775 and I already have that 22 fret neck or I can also get another CIJ '54 RI guitar complete for around $675. Together they would still cost me less than the '57Am RI and I could build yet another guitar with that
Here are my concerns:
I've changed necks around on both my '87 AMStd and my MIM std with no problems and liked the results. If I go the Parts 0 Caster route I'm almost at the same price point as the '57 RI but I'd never get anywhere near that in resale value if it isn't the guitar I want it to be.
I need some prodding in either direction.
Edited for speeling and to ask: "Aside from Comfortably Numb do we really need that extra fret" ?

For resale value get the '57RI. For getting what you want, take the POC. I've built two of them from high quality components with everything I wanted and would not sell them, ever.

"Edited (...) to ask: "Aside from Comfortably Numb do we really need that extra fret" ?"
Sure! The 22th fret is a natural D so it is useful for anything written in the keys of D (Maj or Min),B Min or in any key or mode where a natural D is present or when you put your capo on the 12th fret ! LOL.
But back to your topic now : where could I get a
"CIJ '54 RI guitar complete for around $675" ?

+1 on the '57 and swap necks. For resale, keep the original neck and put it back if you're going to sell it. You'll get no where near the value of a parts-o-caster

StratQuebec ...salut ;)
You just missed a beauty on Fleabay. It was a '54 RI ...the STR54 LS model ...the LS meaning it came with Lace Sensor pups and a 22 fret neck . It's the same neck as mine. I think Fender Japan made this as an Eric Clapton model without using EC's name and saving on some royalties.
The guitar sold for the BIN price of $545 plus $115 shipping from Japan which is a good price. I have only seen one other one like this for sale and it was from Japan also but was priced at $1100 or so.
There was also another for around $650 or so but I don't remember if it was from Japan or in the US. Both are no longer listed. These 2 were execeptional well priced the typical price being over $1000.

Hey myshka! Congrats for the 57. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see the pics. And yep the STR54 LS was a nice one too. Not that I'm on the market for a new strat now but...GAS is always around !
Bonne soirée! Have a good night!

Didn't know they added an extra fret to the ST-54. Wonder if is on all the 54 models now or only the LS.

I have only seen it on an LS model and they are quite rare. Maybe it's no longer being made.

Well the honeymoon is over and I am thinking of swapping the '57RI neck with the '54 RI CIJ. I really miss the extra beef the neck has and that pesky 22 fret.
I think the "57RI has a wider spaced bridge than the CIJ '54RI and I'm wondering if the wider bridge will put the strings to close to the edge of the CIJ neck.
If it does ...will re-cutting a new nut with narrower spacing correct this or is the whole neck just too narrow for the wider American RI bridge.
I am assuming that the CIJ's are like the MIM's and are narrower at the bridge.
