FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Telecasters / Are Tele neck pickups naturally microphonic?

If I tap the cover of my Tele neck pickup with a pick while it is selected, I can hear the taps through the amp. This would not be normal on a Strat and it doesn't seem to happen on any of my other guitars. Seems to me the pickup is microphonic.

I am also getting some pickguard static, though, which makes me wonder if something is making a connection where it shouldn't.

I suppose this could be a repair question if the pickup is indeed problematic, but I'm asking here because you Tele guys (and gals) know better than I about what's normal on these guitars.

No, it's not microphonic. Most Tele neck pickups are wax potted to prevent them from being microphonic.

That click you hear when tapping on the cover is due to the cover being metal. A Strat's pickup cover is plastic, so no click.

Try this on a metal-covered humbucker, and the same thing happens...click!

Thanks, Peegoo. I was right to rely on the ultimate wisdom of the FDP.

So the pickguard static can therefore be remedied merely with a new pickguard, right?

Depends on your body chemistry. Some folks carry the capacity for static electricity more than others; I'd be one of those. So as a result, brushing your hand across the pickguard on many Teles will give you an audibly crackling sound. Happens to me (mostly on Teles) all the time. The solution is to wipe the plastic on the pickguard with one of those laundry-dryer anti-static sheets. That will take care of the crackling, but needs to be re-wiped periodically.

If the clicking bothers you, you could have the cover removed and place pickup take inside the cover (so it would be between the cover and poles) then put the cover back into place. Shouldn't effect the sound at all.
