anyone see a strat like this. no back plate, just holes int he body!?!?

Hard tail bridge. Normal but not all that common. Look at the Robert Cray strat.

I appears to be a 79 hardtail in really good shape. I hate to say but in my opionion it may be a bit overpriced for a hardtail of that era.

What makes black a custom finish? The horribly misaligned neck? That high e string has virtually nothing to work with after 7th fret! I know, I shouldn't drink and post but still...!

I bought a black 3 bolt '75 hardtail at a pawnshop in 1978 for $275. It had the standard white guard, knobs and pu covers.

It is funny to see late 70s stuff be considered "vintage" and command the prices that they do.
I remember about 15 years ago passing on a 1973 black, maple neck strat. I was toying with the idea of having a guitar the same age as my girlfriend, now wife.
It was priced at $450. Even with inflation that's only around $660 now.
Not too long ago those things were just considered passe.
The ultimate is what I read in Guitar and Bass magazine where in 1959 the Gibson Les Paul Standard Cherryburst was priced new at $265 and the Stratocaster was $289. Then in the early 60s the '59 Les Paul was just a used, discontinued guitar that sold for $100. Classic.

"What makes black a custom finish?"
From the '50s until the early '80s, the standard finish for Strats was sunburst and Fender called every other finish a "Custom Color" (and charged extra for it).
That didn't mean you had to special order and wait for it to be custom built if you wanted a color other than sunburst -- dealers regularly stocked a variety of colors. And during the CBS years you couldn't get any color you wanted, just the dozen or so colors they offered as options. So the "Custom Colors" weren't really "custom finishes" the way we'd use the phrase "custom finish" today -- but back then, Fender did indeed call plain old black a Custom Color.
