Hey guys, I just picked up a 1974 silver face 100 watt twin reverb in absolutely immaculate condition for $699.00 This one has the Push pull boost master volume and is loaded with the orange JBL's! Tolex is near perfect, Grill cloth is original with no issues at all, no rust anywhere and has casters. Need opinions from you guys if I got a deal here. Please comment.

If the JBL's are original cones they're worth about half the price.

Not bad. An all time great amp that graced thousands of stages, studios, etc. A generation of musicians gave their hearing to the SF Twin. Just make sure the electrolytic caps are replaced if the originals are still in there. Enjoy.

Don't know if the JBL D-120F's in this amp have been reconed or not. The amp sounds just as clean and crisp as any I have heard. I will have a tech go over the caps and replace as needed and tune up overall. I'll try to post a pic or two when I can. Thanks for your comments.

Just saw a late 70s SR here on CL for $400. It has 4 Fender orange JBLs in it. I would try for it if I were flush.

Are you in Jacksonville, Fl.? If so I checked out that amp the other day and was tempted to buy it on the spot. The speakers are almost worth the price of the amp.

54deluxe..Yep, that was the amp at GC. I walked in and saw it sitting right outside the vintage room. A young fellow walked over and starred at it and I said...man that is what you need...great vintage workhorse. He said that he had been looking for one and wheeled it into the room and plugged in for a test. He wheeled it back outside...I walked over to it and at the same time a guy about my age walks over and said "damn, did this just come in....nice twin! He rolled into the room and plugged in for a test as well...walked out of the room and put it on hold. I finally left wishing I had just bought the damn thing on site. Next day I go back into the store and the guy that put it on hold is walking out and runs into me and says he really did not need the amp so its your dude. i walked over to the counter and bought the thing right there. Were you the guy withe the motorcycle that decided against this amp?

No, I stopped by at lunch sometime last week and the amp was sitting over near the guitar wall. I checked it out and considered buying it on the spot but reminded myself that I already have 8 amps.
My first real amp was a master volume Twin like that one and I put a pair of JBL E120's in it (a real back breaker). I regret to this day trading it for a Legend amp in the eary '80's.
FWIW, that amp is in better shape than the one I had way back when!

Deluxe, Great pic of your les Paul! Damn...you do have a hell of a lineup of gear! No wonder you did not "need" another amp...where would you fit it into the current group of amps. My first amp was a '72 Super Six Reverb...I was 15 and that beast was heavy and could melt glass at 60 yards.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. I've had mine since 1973 (bought it new, $360). It is a master volume,100 watts. I recently had it worked on (new tubes, caps, some other minor maintenance). I think 699 is good price if it is in good condition.
Was just playing it at home this morning. Dang, this thing sounds good. Sounds even better than it used to, now that it has been properly maintained. Nothing does clean like a good twin.

Nice score! If I had that amp I would do some surgery on it, I love TR's but never use the tremolo, and it turns out that if you move the reverb return to the OTHER side of the recovery amp (which costs you one half of a 12ax7 because you need an extra gain stage) the whole system blossoms into a real amp. The TR's are mostly designed to stay clean all the way up, and what this mod does is it allows the reverb channel to get dirty, so you can add your reverb on top of a grittier signal. You can get some real nice sounds this way, and it makes the amp a lot more accessible from the player's standpoint ('cause now you don't need to carry the marshall anymore, you can get basically the same sound of your Twin).

Ampman, Thanks for the mod info! I plan on leaving this baby absolutely the way it is in it's original state. I front a pedal into the normal channel for anything I can't get from it the way it is. It is so damn clean the way it is which is why I bought it! These JBL's are really incredible.

Exceptional amp really, especially for those of us that like it clean. The casters are not only nice on that amp, they are essential. :-) When properly serviced and set up, it is a work horse.

Willie, You are right about the casters...damn thing is heavy! I have a Pro Tube Twin amp as well and it is a beast on the weight side and has casters....but I swear the twin seems a bit heavier!

Hi ozzy, I have a 72 and a 77. I did blackface them and took out the blue molded caps and replaced them with Mallory's and atom bypass caps. I also changed out some of the older carbon comps with nos ones, same values . The 77 one I have the normal cannel with spragues and Mallory's in the vibrato. I removed the master volume and made it a variable neg feedback control. I also put in a switched intensity pot to disconnect the tremelo circuit for increased gain. Its sound is so flexible from clean to crunch and I can get the sounds I like about 3 vol 6 treb 3 mid 4 bass. I stumbled on a mix of a emi red white and blues and an emi neo 2512 for the speakers . Right now it think it is my best sounding amp.
One other thing I have installed 6l6wgc TAD biased at 33mv and a combination of preferred series 12ax7, tad 12ax7 and a telefunken 12at7 for the PI .
