I wonder if he has heirs, and what they make of it. It is so sad that a whole generation has passed not knowing what became of him.

I take it Sgt Copping was never seen again?
That is one huge desert for something like that going noticed for 70 years. It makes you want to know what else is sitting out there to be found.

Amazing! This is a gripping image that pulls us back in time. What an incredible drama to suddenly comes to light after all these years. I would love to know what happened.

There was a missing B-24, the "Lady Be Good" but it was found many years ago. One of the props from the LBG was at the entrance to Wheeless AFB in Tripoli Lybia. I'm sure there were several planes that were missing. The Sahara is a big place and not many folks live in the mid and southern part of it.

Reminds me of a movie/TZ or something called Sole Survivor. This story is loosely based on the discovery of the B-24 "Liberator" bomber the "Lady Be Good" that was found in the Libyan desert after the crew got lost on their 1st bombing mission to Italy.

Remember Flight 19, the lost in the Bermuda Triangle squadron? That was a well-known mystery when I was a boy, solved in 1991.

There were other returning Liberator bombers based in Lybia who went missing: returning from a mission (hence fuel low), if they missed the coastal landing strip due to the blackouts they just rolled on South over the desert til they ran out of juice - sometimes not even realizing at night that they had even crossed the coast.
South of the coastal strip in North Africa is nothing but a whole lot of sand and rock. You crash there with 110 degree daytime heat and you're about as close to 100% gone as anywhere on earth. Likely wouldn't last a couple of days. And the USAF / RAF would probably assume you'd been shot down over Germany so wouldn't even come looking for any wreckage. Tragic beyond belief...
This kind of "disappearing into the wilderness" happens quite a bit in Australia too - same deal with a never-ending desert expanse.

Remarkable. I wonder if the pilot's remains will ever be found?
Who made the Kittyhawk P-40, by the way?

The Flight 19 was interesting reading... thanks for posting that. The Bermuda Triangle has always interested me... I've been on the fringes as a boat captain, there's some weird stuff goes on down there... watching your compass spin in circles makes you do a double look.
