3rd Wave is an all instrumental combo playing in the Richmond, VA area. Repertoire consists of approximately 60 songs: 20% surf standards, the rest mostly rock and pop with a few originals. Loosely modeled after the Ventures. Goal is to play studio quality music live. Generally we play 3-5 times a month in the warmer months and occasionally in the winter.
Requirements: ability to follow arrangements using a chord chart. One small and one large tube amp (2 x 12" minimum for outdoor jobs). totally professional attitude and approach. Below is a link to our old MySpace site, it has several songs (recorded live) that will give an idea of what we do. Thanks, Casey

Thanks for the encouragement, hope there's someone in the area who can do the job for us. We've found that there are a lot of people who like an all instrumental band.

I like your format. All instrumentals is my favorite way to go. Not that I'm a "studio quality"
musician. I do wish you luck, though.

Hey Casey - best of luck in finding the right guy. As you may (or may not) remember, I'm in an instrumental band very similar to yours and you are right - "there are a lot of people who like an all instrumental band." My band had a lot of down time in the last year due to losing a member (more than once) and having to start over again with someone new. It can be frustrating.
My whole band is made up of guys who connected through CraigsList, but while that has worked well for us it doesn't work for everyone. Hope you find someone quickly. I truly believe that there are a LOT of guys out there who would jump at the chance to be in this kind of band. You just need to find each other.

One thing I've found playing in 3rd Wave is that the Venture's format of playing a variety of music using 2 guitars / bass / drums is still viable. What has worked for us has been careful song selection along with concise (usually around 3 minutes) arrangements. The other thing I have focused on is being able to play at low to moderate volumes when appropriate - we have gotten a number of job offers where this was specifically mentioned. I'm saving Craigslist for the next step, thought this forum (and Surf Guitar 101) would be a good place to start.

One place you might find a player is in the Army band at Fort Lee. Their commander right now plays a mean banjo and dobro in addition to being a drummer.

Surfing lore has it that waves come in sets of 3, with the 3rd being the largest of the set, and worth waiting for.
