Not concerned about special affects. Only interested in a starter bass amp in the $100(plus/minus a bit) range that has a respectable amount of LOW bass sound for an amp in this price range.

Thanks for your time.

Hmmmmm . . . if you're talking about buying new, I don't think you're going to find much in the way of a bass amp that can put out a credible low end for $100.

I'd recommend used. I just saw a local craigslist ad for a Fender Bassman 60 combo for $50! I called the next day (even though the LAST thing I need is another amp!) but it was gone.

Something like that, or maybe a used Peavey TNT/TKO combo, is probably your ticket.

Good luck!

For a more recent Peavey a used Basic 60 is a good amp sometimes available in the $100 range.

Nothing. Practice amp sound like garbage. That's why they are practice only amps.

If you can find a Fender Bassman 25 on the used market, they actually sound quite nice.

I got a brand new GC Acoustic B100 for $137.00 on Black Friday. The B20 is a nice little 20 water for just over $100.00

Yep, I use a Bassman 25 myself with a small coffeehouse-type group that I sometimes gig with.

Surprisingly good sound and surprising low end for such a small amp.

I really like my Acoustic B20. $130 brand new. I've played a few churches with one, even with a drummer and it held its own. 20 watts through a 12" speaker. Great around the house.

Part of the answer depends on why you want an entry level amp. Personally, I think these are a waste of time and money unless you are truely an entry level player and unsure if you want to play bass. For anyone who begins learning bass and then enjoys it, an entry level amp is only going to be of any use for six months at best. If you are already enjoying yourself I see no point in getting anything under 100 watts so you can play against a drummer when the opportunity arises. But there are certain situations where a small amp can be valuable.

As a rule, cheap amps make cheap tone. If your circumstance is one of needing lower power against acoustic instruments then I can see a small but not necessarily entry level amp.

If the Acoustic B20 is a clone of the original B20 from the '70s and early eighties then I would also recommend it. Side by side, I don't know of another practice amp under 40 watts that sounds as good and that is from side by side comparison in our shop against new gear. Other than that, I would set a minimum of 60 watts in your quest for an amp and I would certainly buy something used and test drive it in the situation you intend to use it before you reach the point of not being able to return it.

Buy used so if this is a case of being an entry level player you don't loose over half of your money when you sell it later.

very informed group here ...about a year or two ago, I went on the hunt for the ultimate small amp for practice/small rooms (for my taste).. my criteria did include budget restrictions similar to yours .. with that said, here were my findings ...

...the Bassman 25 mentioned was voiced amazingly LOW for its size and the tilt back design was very nice (I paid $100 including shipping for one off of Ebay) ...I actually found this amp to be voiced TOO low naturally for my taste, as I prefer a nice CLEAR sound in my bedroom practice amp when playing along with CD's and learning songs, to show off the mistakes and nuances in my practice ..

I also picked up an Ampeg B50r, also known as a B50Rocket ... this too sounded amazing, very deep and almost 'flip-topish', but again just too low for my bedroom practice, and quite frankly worth too much for me to tuck away in a bedroom ... probably the best sounding 50 watt and less bass amp I have ever seen, bought and sold this for $250

This is what I ended up with for my needs and criteria:

... the Peavey Basic 60 mentioned also goes by several other names, including the Basic 112, etc ... I attended one of our bass 'get togethers' off of another forum, and picked this up for $100 ... I use this for all my basement rehearsals with our 50's/60's group (two guitars, keys, drums, me) ... plays much bigger than its 60 watts, good tonal varieties, can go super deep all the way to crystal clear, and built like a tank ... however, I needed a bedroom amp that I can leave in place, and never have to move, and opted for a Peavey Minx 110 ... not the deepest sounding rig, but perfect for my needs with very focused mids for clarity .. I have it about 3' from me on the side at waist height while sitting, 30-35 watts, 10" speaker, perfect for bedroom volumes ... I then have a scenario at a church where I will need a very small personal monitor, so I picked up a second Minx just for that .. one is sealed and the other is ported .. I paid less than $75 for each ...

Edit to add: everything I have here is long discontinued, so you will definitely need to look used, but as mentioned, probably the way to go for a need in this price range ... JMHO

Tom -- "One is sealed and the other is ported": Is there a significant difference in tone or volume between them?

FWIW, I had a Minx 110 which I liked very much. Mine had no extension speaker jack (some do), so I had one installed (cost about $35, if I remember). Adding an extension cab also ups the wattage from 30 to 50 watts, and makes the Minx a pretty giggable amp.

Wish I still had it.

Lester, did you find something you liked?

Bear, the ported Minx seems to go a bit lower, and the sealed is noticably louder (or at least seems louder, probably due to more mid present)... with that said, I can pretty much EQ either to sound similar ... Peavey seemed to seal a lot of cabs during their Sheffield days, as the Basic 112 I have is also a sealed Sheffield, and that too seems to far exceed what a 60 watt amp should be capable of ...

Veddy interesting. Thanks, Tom! Bass cab design is a really tricky business (I've made some of my own). Theoretically, the optimum cab for a given 10" bass speaker is usually ported, and HUGE, which for me defeated the whole purpose of making 'em! Seems that for the desired small, light and loud enclosure, sealed is often better.

what do you mean the bass is too loud?

About 15 years ago I bought a fender BXR-25,
a ported 10" speaker, 25W little over a $100.
Use to be called the RAD 25, dunno if its
repackaged as the Bassman 25 now

Really decent, low bass considering the small size
and price, could be perfect for practicing
in your room. I use it for acoustic jams,
small, unobstrusive, but really gets the job
done.

Found one for $109 at a GC web site, not sure if they ship. Google Fender BXR-25
