Your advise would be welcome to help choose my one and only strat.
Basically I am an acoustic player but over the years can hold my own as a rhythm/lead guitarist on electric.
I went shopping here in Australia for my first electric in years (I used to own a PRS) and was shown the 2011 AM standard in sunburst with a maple neck for $1299 runout price.
I really like this guitar, it played well, sounded very nice through a Blues Junior, was not too heavy and was very resonant.
However, the salesperson said that the shop was having the runout to make way for the new 2012 series and is getting the same colour guitar in a 2012 model next week; it is expected to be priced about for $1699 to $1750 ($400 more)
The salesperson reckoned the 2012 is worth the extra price due to the enhancements. I am not so sure. I have put a deposit on the 2011 but can change to the 2012 if I change my mind.
To be honest, I really couldn't tell the difference in tone between models so this is not an issue for me, but I am a little apprehensive that the 2011 may be a mistake if the 2012 is going to be an appreciably better guitar. I fear regretting buying the older model.
Basically, I know very little about strats and the different models (its all too confusing) so can you advise if its worth paying the extra for the 2012?

The new 2012 Strats has Fat 50's pickups which would be the biggest change and after that it has aged plastic parts.
Nice improvements for sure but if you are saving 400.00 on a new 2011 model I think that is a good deal. The 2011 Strats are excellent and the pickups still sound great. In fact the difference between the previous standard pickups and the Fat 50's pickups can come down to a matter of taste and you may not even prefer one over the other.
400.00 more for a 2012 model is overpriced in my opinion.
Make sure though that the 2011 model has a straight neck and no issues that would make it 400.00 cheaper.

Is the $1299 price Aussie dollars or US dollars? What's the exchange rate difference if you're talking Aussie? If that's US dollars the price seems high, especially if they're looking to move them.
I bought a 2011 AM Standard Strat last November. 3TSB / rosewood. The going price in the US was $1,049. Fender had the $100 discount going, so $949 out the door with the Fender HSC. I absolutely love it. Beautifully made, and no issues of any kind. Are the fat '50's measurably better, and worth the extra $400? (Shrug), not to me, and I don't worry about it. Maybe Fender's doing it just to shake things up?
The pups are Alnico V's, and give me all the woody, or bell sounding stratty tone I want. I haven't played one with the fat 50's , so I can't comment on the difference. With a couple of OD's, delay, and a vintage tube amp, I'm loving life.

Go for the 2011. I did. :)
Different pickups are not worth $400.

"The American Standard Stratocaster has been upgraded with aged plastic parts, the Jade Pearl Metallic finish option and full-sounding Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s pickups for the very essence of Stratocaster tone."
Doesn't seem worth $400 to me either. You could get the pickups and parts on their own for less, if you really wanted them.

hi strat rock,
it's in Aussie dollars
the price includes the national 10% sales tax etc...
usually a am strat goes for about $1599 to $1699 depending on discount and if there is a sale on.
they are not going to give a big discount on the 2012 model
it's higher than in the US but about the same as if I were to import one after shipping and customs costs.
plus I get to play it first....

Grab the 2011.
You played it, you liked it, that's all you need to know.
The salesman is going to pitch the guitar that makes him the most profit.

Yes, get the 2011, if you like it. The 2012 model will be obsolete as soon as you take it home, like anything else--there will be something newer and shinier to take its place.
You can always get some Fat 50's pups on ebay, if you want to. But by then everyone will probably be talking about how great the 2011's pups were, and asking why don't they make AS Strats that way anymore.

I agree with all above comments. Although are reputed to be nice pups and are rated high on the FDP, they 'aint worth an extra $400. The aged plastic parts look great but certainly aren't worth the increase either. You can buy a set of the net for fairly cheap (I have upgraded a couple of Strats with vintage plastic but can't remember how much it cost but it may have been @ Aus$20.00).
I have a 2008 AmStd and it is awesome in every respect. Mine cost @ Aus$1850.00 at the time.

I know it cost more, but I'd look into the 2012 Select Series. I bought a Select HSS in Vintage Burst and it's well worth the extra money. I played a wall full of strat's which included some high dollar guitars. The Select HSS was heads above the others in pure tone, fit and finish and playability. Musicians Friend has 15% off which brings the Select Strat to $1742.49 USD. They also have a Select SSS strat, but I fell in love with the creamy tone of the HSS.

The 2011 seems like a good deal. I just picked up a 2012 Telecaster using MF's 15% off discount, and its great, but I don't know if I would agree that its worth $400 more.
