So, I'm starting to consider replacing the pickups in my Lipe. I just am not sure the Amalfitanos are cutting it. Need to do more playing outside my bedroom before I make any changes, but I'm starting to think about it.

Here are my issues. I would like the neck humbucker to be "sweeter". It's a little harsh, in the upper-mid area. I don't want it too dark, tho. I use it mostly for soloing, with some gain, but also for jazzy chording & solos at times, tho I am NOT a fan of the standard jazz guitar tone with all the highs rolled off. That always sounds muffled to me. I like the unwound strings to sing.

I'd like the middle single coil to be "woodier". I know this isn't the easiest thing to do in the middle, but again, it's a little harsh. Needs to be relatively high output to at least try to keep up with the 'buckers, as I do use it for leads on occasion. And the quack in positions 2 & 4 is just too quacky and sharp. I'd like it to mellow out some.

The neck 'bucker needs to be higher output than it is right now (I forget, I think it's around 8.2), as the neck pup over-powers it, even tho it measures at a lower output. I do like its quality of being horn-like. Kinda trumpety, and not too harsh. I just need more of it. Again, the unwound strings need to sing. I do play some heavy styles as well at times, with a good amount of gain.

So, overall I need versatility.

My guess is that some of the harshness from the neck and middle pups come from the mango cap on the guitar. It's a mahogany body, but apparently the mango is bright. (maple neck w/ a rosewood finger board).

The guitar itself is very nice, plays with ease, and sustains a note forever, largely because of its construction and quality parts.

One other requirement is that I want the pickups to have screw adjustments for the magnets. I'm particular about the balance of each string's output against the others. (Can you even do that on single coils?)

Anyway, I'd like to hear what some of you pickup gurus have to say! Not concerned about cost (at this point, anyway), just what's best.

One thing I've heard other people use to describe a pickup sound is "open". I'd like a more open sound, especially for the neck pup, but also the bridge.

I have a HSH MIA strat, I have Dimarzio Breed in neck and Tone Zone in bridge. Breed is a little darker than the PAF PRO and Air Classic. I use it in split coil mode a lot and Breed is just right. Tone Zone is a darker pup that is about the best I tested in the neck position. The split coil is amazing. I use the north coil mainly and it gives me great sound.

Both pups are medium output that can drive but not so hot that it loss the sweetness like the hot ceramic stuff.

I use the Dimarzio Vertual Solo in middle. But I change the magnets using the Area 61 low pull magnets. Normal single coil don't quite match the hb, not even the Lace.

I did a lot of experiments with different pups, Breed and TZ give the best single coil sound when split. To me, that's the most important.

Cool, thanks. I will be splitting the coils ONLY in positions 2 & 4, so I'm most concerned about the humbucking sound on those pups.

Keep 'em coming!

For some years I've wanted to put together a H-S-H guitar with a Lace Hot Gold and 2 Lace Hot Gold Duallys. You know, like smark's Bender Scallopcaster.

On my HSH, I have individual 3 way switch to split the neck and bridge hb independently. It is very important to me. The two coil of the hb sound very different and the sound is very useful. Don't limit yourself to hb on neck and bridge, only split in 2 and 4. Try it, you'll thank me for that.

If you select the right hb, the split coil sound is very good, they might not sound like a true strat single coil, but mine has the glassiness and fullness that I like better than the strat single coil. I actually use the hb in split mode more so than hb mode.

With the individual split switch, you can create so many more different sound, the sound of the 2 and 4 position is totally different from the coil of the hb you choose.

shg, I have Lace Hot Golds (not Duallys) in my Strat. I like them pretty well. I don't know, I want the neck pup to be kinda transparent and open sounding, and don't know if a Dually will do that.

That's why you'd use a Lace Hot Gold Dually - it's two perfectly-normal Lace Hot Golds in series. If you bypass the bridge-side coil then you have a Lace Hot Gold single in the neck position.

Thanks. My point is, I like the HGs, but they are not the end-all for me. I'm greedy -- I want more!

So I've been looking around at humbuckers. I've listened to a few things, and what I like so far are the Lollars. I know that's a popular brand at FDP. But they're kinda pricey. It would be over $400 for a H-S-H set. Any other suggestions?
