Put in the Vintage Kit from RS electronics recently and WOW! What a difference! I'd read a lot of rave reviews about this and Boy am I happy I made the change!
Much better range on both the tone and volume controls. For eg. with the stock electronics when I dialled down the volume from 10 down to 7-8 there was a significant loss in volume as well as treble. Not anymore! I can get a full range of volume difference from 1-10 on the dial. Same with the tone controls, nice range from darkish (woman tone) to sparkling highs, not icepicky irritating.
Anyway I'm very glad what the RS Kit did to my R8! Thinking about throwing some boutique PAF replicas now. I like what I hear from Throbaks!

I think you should wait a while about putting in new pups. I'd fiddle with the height adjustment first. You might not be in the "sweet spot". Also, you might find that just putting new pots in there is all it needed. Did you get new caps, too?
Have fun!

Urby, the pre wired kit from RS come with both pots and caps. The Burstbucker pickup on the bridge went dud and the tech says I have to replace it. I had no particular issue with the BB's to have to change them but now that I HAVE to change it I'm thinking why not get something nicer! I've been intrigued by Throbak followed closely by Wolftone and Sheptones.

Is the RS kit '50s wiring? IIRC, the Historics have "modern" wiring. Or did they fix that, or did you do the '50s mod before you replaced the harness?
I'm sure the RS pots have excellent tapers, but the results you report seem similar to what I read about the '50s mod.

The pickups went bad before the new kit was installed. The Historic 2009 R8 already had the stock electronics wired 50's style. The new RS kit definitely has excellent taper compared to stock.

So the 2009 Historics had linear taper pots? And the RS kit has audio taper, correct?
I'm just a bit confused because at some point, I think maybe 2010, Gibson got it right and went to the correct audio taper, making kits like RS pretty redundant.
Anywho, glad you like the new electronics. I find the RS kits to sound very bright in my guitars, but I do own a set of Throbaks in my R4 with factory buckers.
They are pricey, and I think the old wire the winder used per old Gibson specs is all gone in the new production line. So maybe you'd want to try to score a set of used ones. Not mine though. haha. They are going nowhere!

The RS Guitar pots have a fantastic taper which is like the old Centralabs pots from the 50's. Make no mistake these are much different than the audio taper in the current Gibsons.
I just bought an ES330 which had the 500K audio tapers. They were basically on/off switches which did not lend itself to the two pickup design and blending different variations of volume. For example, if you had the neck pickup on "3" and the bridge pickup on "8" the lower volume of the neck pickup would be the output. This made blending pickups almost unusable unless they were equal. I think for this reason Gibson uses the linear pots, but a good audio taper sure helps in cleaning up a dirty tone. I also have the RS Superpots in my 58 Reissue as well. The 50's wiring is great as well, but the ES 330 did a good job with the stock Gibson tone pots and and 50's wiring.
