So you buy a new guitar. Do you take the floor model that you actually played and that you like the feel of, or do you opt for the minty untouched one in the box?

Depends on the condition of the "floor model" and how the "minty" one feels.

I always bought the model I demo'd.

If the floor model was trashed in a way I wouldn't own it, or they wouldn't come down to what I could afford, I'd play a boxed one and see how it was and make my decision based on that.

Now that I mail order, well....

There is far too much difference between any two guitars, for me to buy one I have not played and chosen. It mostly is a matter of no two (or three, or five....) pieces of wood being sonically identical, but there can of course be a number of other quality control differences.

Yeah. In amps, I usually take the minty one in the box, but for a guitar, I can't imagine buying one I hadn't played. I guess I'd make an exception for mail/net order, but I've never bought a guitar that way.

I can do both. My last purchase was from a Mom & Pop and had to be ordered from Fender's next model run.

You buy the guitar you try out and like, HELLO? (;oD

Seriously, I very rarely order guitars online because I have to play them first.

I bought an AmDlx Strat in the 90's from GC. I tried about 6 of them in the store to find the right one.
Bought a new Mesa Lonestar Special that died within a weekend. Probably the rec tube. I took the amp back to GC and they shipped me a new one in a box.

I have bought guitars and amps from a lot of places around the country and it's usually the ones that I demoed.

I've gotten guitars online and it's usually worked out for me.

But if I'm trying something out in a store, I'm buying the one I played. I wouldn't have picked it up if I wasn't interested (i.e., it was damaged or otherwise not acceptable).

Same goes for amps - and pedals.

I've only bought one new guitar in my life. I opted for the box one after playing it of course.

I rarely buy a guitar out of a shop, most of my purchases are online. I guess I am not too particular, I'm not the guy who plays ten of the same model and then picks "the one".

Whenever I have purchased from a shop, its either been a used piece or if new, the only one the shop had, so the minty option wasn't there.

Thanks for the input! I normally buy used so there is no box option. When new and an instrument, I take the demo warts and all because it has to have what I want (weight, tone, feel, etc.).

One time I bought a Vox Pathfinder 15R and took the one in the box. The reverb was dead. I returned it for the next one in the box, and it had something funny going on with the volume being low and weird noise. Oh, and the reverb on that one was *almost* dead.

Those were all the boxed ones they had! I took the floor model and I haven't had a problem. Speaker was broken in, too. XD

I've taken the amp and most effects units that I tested as well, I'm not worried about minor cosmetic scuffs generally that I'd put on myself if they're even present on the floor model.

Think I've only bought a couple units in person that were NIB that I didn't take out and test myself because it was the first one in and the shop handed it to me to demo.

Usually were the 'stack of them' on clearance at GC or its ilk.

But I've bought every amp but I think one used in my life, new was a HRD and I took the model I played, broken in speaker and all.

I've only bought a few guitars new as well, so the option hasn't generally been there.

Hmmm? Interesting. Thinking about the guitars I've bought as 'floor models', I'be bought 5. Three of them were Rickenbackers, all bought at different locations.

The rest of the considerable amount I have were bought on-line, sight unseen amd everyone a keeper.

As far a amps go, I've got only one of 7(?), I think, that wasn't a 'floor model'.

I don't recall ever buying an instrument or amp out of a box. Effects--sure.

I like to check out the setup and playability. And the music stores I buy from have their entire stock on display.
