The pick guard has warped in the two weeks I've had it. All along the upper edge between screws. When I press down next to the neck pickup, it moves about a 1/4 inch! I'm taking it in for my free setup at EM Shorts Saturday and I'll have them address the pick guard issue.

One of the reasons I don't like single-ply guards.

EM Shorts will fix it. Why mess with it myself when a trained, experienced luthier at a Fender Authorized Repair dealer will do it for free? I have no doubt they'll make it right.

I replaced mine with a guard from WD. 3-ply white but with the same 8-hole screw pattern as the original. Looks better IMHO, and no warping.

If it's going to be a problem, I may do that as well.

This is exactly why Leo went to 3 ply and 11 screws in 1959. The price of being "vintage"...

Those single-ply ABS and styrene guards are junk. People tolerate them because "that's what Buddy Holly had," and other whacked logic like that.
Some don't warp, but most do. The Jimmie Vaughan Strat comes with 'em on there. Junk!

I often wondered ... when the original single ply 8 hole first came out, did Fender also have the full aluminum shield installed as well ?
Wouldn't gluing the shield to the pickguard strengthen it and prevent warping ?

From Vintage Guitars Collector website:
"Celluloid "mint green" three layer (white/black/white) pickguard (sometimes called a "nitro" pickguard), with 11 attachment screws. This celluloid pickguard was implemented around 7/59. A thin aluminum shield the size of the pickguard is installed underneath the three layer pickguard. This replaces the thicker and much smaller shield previously used on single layer pickguards (this older style shield encompassed just the three pots and the switch)."

I went to EM Shorts today for my setup. Perfect job as always! Also, found replacement acrylic 8 hole pickguards and also the aluminum shield! I'm thinking a parchment color pickguard for $27 and the aluminum shield for $15. Callaham Guitars.
Got the aluminum shield ordered and decided to glue the original pickguard to the aluminum shield. Also, found out that it's easier and cheaper to order Callaham parts from Acme Guitar Works. I'll probably use 3M Contact Cement to glue the pickguard to the shield. The shield is made from 6061-T6 Aluminum sheet, .014" thick. This is identical to the aluminum shields Leo used on some 50's Strats. The shields are drilled for old 8-hole and for newer 11-hole pickguards.

One of the reasons I returned one I bought a couple of years ago. The guard was already warped, right out of the box.

I have a '92 MIK Fender Squier Series strat with a single ply pickguard. The pickguard on this strat is much thicker than those on EC strats. I've seen warped pickguards on EC strats hanging in music shops. I really don't understand why Fender doesn't address this obvious flaw. EC strats aren't cheap. Quality should be the norm.

I still haven't installed the shield on my EC Blackie yet. I decided to have a laser scan done so I can make copies with a CNC Waterjet. Our scanner just got back from repair & calibration and I'm on vacation all next week so it will be a couple weeks before I install it.

Interesting. The '83 hardtail I just got has 12 screws, like my '84 bowling-ball, with the additional one near the jack since it's in the spot where the second tone control traditionally was. They have single-ply pickguards. No warpage on the bowling-ball & I've had it since '89.

The problem manifests itself mostly with thin pickguards that are secured by only 8 screws. This is precisely why Leo went to 3 ply guards and 11 screws in 1959. If you want strictly period correct, you get some of the problems that were present back then. Another inconvenience back in the day was the truss rod adjustment screw in the heel of the neck rather than at the headstock.

It made me want to check my Clapton Strat out. No problem with mine. Like the day I bought it.
I haven't played outdoors with it though which may pose a problem if the sun sun is beating down on it.
