FDP Forum / Fender Amps: Vintage (before 1985) / Super Chanp II vs Princeton Reverb II

Not so long a go I sold my Super Champ II to a friend. I wouldn't say I regret it as I used the money to buy an SG, but I do miss that amp.

So I was considering asking if he wanted to trade for my Silverface Pro Reverb (pre master volume model).

But then I thought would I be better off with the Princeton Reverb II and get the benefit of the 12" speaker. But before I start on my quest I wanted to make sure that I correct in thinking that the PR II is in the exact sane amp as the SC II but just has the 12" speaker?

I loved the sound and functionality of the Super Champ. I was even a big fan of the overdrive channel.

Yes: It is my understanding that the "Heads" are the same for the Super Champ and the Princeton II.

They're 2 very different 'heads'... see the link below for the schematics. There are some things in common but the 2 amps have different tube complement, tone stack, 'lead' effect switching, and PI. Slightly smaller power output on the SC.

(edited to add) Duppy, if it's the 'lead' sound that you're hankering after, the SC's 'lead' sound's got a lot of fans, the PRII hardly any. It's achieved in the SC by overdriving a 6C10 and in the PRII by overdriving a 12AX7... maybe that's got something to do with it.

Oh okay thanks for that. So what are the differences between a PRII and a Concert II?

And do you think my Silverface Pro Reverb for the Super Champ is a fair trade?

The Concert's in another league - 60W, 2x6L6, genuine channel switching, fx loop, several different speaker configurations out there.

I _think_ your proposed swop is fair, given that my opinion isn't that well-informed and these things will always be approximate! :-)

I would not trade a Silver Pro Reverb for any Revera era Amp. I owned a PRII and it was pretty cool. But the Silver Pros Reverbs I have heard were way way cooler.

Johnny, much as I love my PRII, I wouldn't have given the opinion I did if it involved just any Rivera-era amp. But this is about Super Champ, which does generally seem to be _so_ prized and beloved...

I have both of these amps. The Super Champ is so small, light and easy to haul around. It has a decent Fender clean tone, a real reverb, it's plenty loud enough for rehearsals and has a cool overdrive tone without pedals. I open the volume all the way and use the master to adjust overall volume. Nice blusey crunch that cleans up when I back off the guitar volume. There's more gain available with the pull knob/footswitch feature, but I don't need it for my style. Very handy amp.
The PRII has tons more clean headroom. I can put mine on 10 and it still doesn't distort much. Just gets real loud. Much more body and clean punch than the SC. Very rich, full sounding clean tone and loud enough to be gig worthy with a moderate volume band. If you replace the short, side mounted reverb tank with a regular long, bottom mounted tank, you can get the reverb quality of the usual large Fender amp. IMO, if you want distortion, this amp needs a pedal, but it does well with pedals. Both are very good amps in their own way, but they are very different.

I also own both of these amps. 6 Cylinder Slim's description is dead on.
