seems weird,
I joined yesterday
posted my first message, and today that topic isn't even listed.

I see a locked notice at the top of the page...
what's up?

I didn't see your thread yesterday so I don't know what happened.

But you have another thread entitled "why a neck humbucker" on the Tele page. Is it possible you forgot that you posted it on the Tele page instead of the Pup Tent?

(The locked notice at the top of the Pup Tent has been there for over a year -- it has nothing to do with your missing post.)

To answer your question, quoting from that other thread:

"Versatility, and, of course, no hum!
Gets some better jazz tones, and a creamier distorted sound."

I also like using it as a fusion-y lead tone.

I prefer full size hb over the normal strat pup because even though I like single coil sound, I don't favor Strat pup sound. I like the split coil of some hb better. On top of everything, I can kick it over the top by switching back to hb for solo and have noise cancelling.

My current favorite neck hb is Dimarzio Breed neck DP165. Split coil is not too bright, just the right amount of glassiness. I wire the switch so I get 250K across the coil when split to tame the highs, but back to 500K in hb mode to get the best of both worlds. Also I like the south coil ( one farther from the neck) as it give a different sound.

If you like splitting coil, don't use the brighter vintage type of hb on Strat. I tried Dimarzio Air Classic and PAF PRO, their split coil is to glassy, to the point of breaking glass. PAF PRO is perfect on a darker guitar like my Les Paul. For brighter guitar like Strat, get the medium ones like Breed.

Timely post, as I am rerouting the neck cavity in a Warmouth alder tele body today later to accept an SD mini. I did not spec that rout when I ordered it, so it has the standard rout.I decided to try a mini SD in the neck for the reasons above in this thread.

It will be the SD mini-antiquity HB and a 3-way switch with that wiring. I'm going to use a Bill Lawrence L298T in the bridge and see how it agrees with the SD mini.

Alan0354 - How do you go about getting both 250K and 500K? Two separate pots? Is there a wiring diagram somewhere for this set-up?

I designed this myself. You start with the 500K volume pot. I have a three way switch to do coil tapping. It is a 3 way ON-OFF-ON double pole double throat. I only need one side to tap either the south or north coil in the two end position. In the middle off position is the hb.

The way to connect is using only one side of the switch.
1) one end of the switch of the ON position connect to the output of the humbucker that goes to the 5 way switch.
2) the middle OFF position of the switch to the two wires connections between the two coil.
3) the other end of the switch of the ON position to ground ( the casing of the volume pot).

With that, you can choose the north or the sound coil at both end of the switch. You get hb when the switch is in the middle position.

Then for doing the 250K:
1) Solder a 500K resistor on the middle OFF position of the second side of the 3 way switch. The other side of the resistor solder to ground.
2) Solder the two end of the switch together ( both the ON position). Then connect to the output of the hb that connect to the 5 way switch.

With that, the resistor disconnected from the output of the hb pickup when the switch is in the middle position that choose hb, so you only get the 500K of the volume pot. But if you switch to either end of the switch to get the single coil tapping, the 500K resistor will connect to the output of the hb. The 500K resistor in parallel with the 500K volume pot to get 250K termination.

It is very easy to do. Ask question if you don't understand this. If you want drawing, give me your email address and I draw one up for you.
