My dad bought this guitar when he was a teenager for $50. I knew my dad had an old electric guitar, but I thought it was a piece of junk, until I started looking into it more. My dad said that a shop gave him two pieces of information: It's a Fender, and it's a '67. Here's some pictures:

My dad says the electronics are in bad shape and it needs to pickups and needs a lot of work otherwise. I imagine that the guitar is more valuable with the original pickups. Can these be repaired? About how much would it cost to have the electronics fixed professionally? And about what is this guitar worth in its current condition, and what would it be worth if fixed?
Thanks for your time,
Ricky

I am curious to see what folks say. There are things that bother me about the guitar and make me wonder about its authenticity. I don't want to make you feel bad, especially because I'm no expert and I could be wrong. But the things that bug me:
The body and pickup layout is a Bass VI, not a Jag. Jags IME don't have six-on-a-plate tuners. Also, the bridge looks a little funny to me. There are also some clues that the headstock is a little weird - the angle where the "ball" meets the curve under the logo looks very sharp to me.
Hope I'm wrong and someone can verify what this is. Even if it is a bunch of parts, they look like cool parts!

I'm no expert, but that's a Bass VI, or at least it started out as one.
Jag's have 2 pickups and 3 switches on the control plate; the 3-pickup/4-switch layout is definitely Bass VI.
And the bridge does look like a replacement of some sort. Knobs and tuners, as well.
No idea about the value - those with more knowledge on such things will hopefully be checking in shortly.
Still could be a really fun restoration project.

Raises my fakery radar as well.
As far as value, etc. it's worth what it's worth. I doubt much as there isn't enough info to judge it anything other than a weird copy.

Hmm..unfortunately, I don't think it's a Fender Ricky. But, it's definitely a cool guitar and it's worth something. I'll give you TWICE what your Dad paid for it :)
I'm not an expert on the Bass VI but they have been on my wish list for years. I do have a lot of experience with the 60's Jaguars and several things jump out at me about your guitar.
Obviously it's not a Jaguar like the decal says. The tuners, knobs, pickups, pickguard, and bridge are not Fender. The headstock shape doesn't look right. The Bass VI did not have a slanted bridge pickup. The fretboard wood on the neck just doesn't look like Fender rosewood and the position markers are not right for a Bass VI anyway. The pick up switch cover plate is not right for a Bass VI (it's the wrong shape and the Bass VI had screws at the ends). The pickguard screws are in the wrong places for it to be a Bass VI. It doesn't look like it even has a Fender logo on the vibrato cover plate.
Still, it's a pretty cool looking replica. As far as getting it fixed: The electronics could definitely be repaired and it makes sense if it's otherwise pretty solid overall, neck, frets, etc. I wouldn't go back to the shop that told your Dad it was a '67 Jaguar. Hopefully you can find somebody with more Fender experience. It might not even need new pickups just some trouble shooting and a tune up. If it's a funky homemade project or cheap-o copy it's possible with all the switch wiring and stuff you just have some things that could be easily sorted out. Worst case, a set of pick ups might be $200 and another $50 for new pots, jacks, switches, etc. plus labor.
Good luck with it...but my offer still stands!

Looks to me like a "serviceman" copy. These were made in SE Asia (primarily in the Philippines) and sold to US military personnel who were passing through Vietnam. I haven't seen any with the four-switch and three-pickup setup, but since they were just clones based on advertisements available to the factories, it's not too much of a stretch to see why these exist.

Wow, so many replies so quickly! You all are so helpful and friendly- this is really a great little corner of the internet you have here.
Thanks for the information. It looks like it will be a fun project to tinker around with. Hahaha, and Liquid Smoke, I will tell my father of you offer!
Thanks so much,
Ricky
