Once you get past Rapid City and Mount Rushmore, there's Wall, S.D. with famous Wall Drug Store, and Mitchell -- home of the Corn Palace!

Day 7 7/13 on the road to Mt. Rushmore. At 7:50 odometer at 5460. Cloudy and 66 but expected to hit 90s today. As predicted, it was hot! Crossing Wyoming through the Big Horn National Forest and then on To Hill City, SD for the night. After checking in about 4 I went for a 3 mile run, a dip in the. Pool and an early dinner before riding up to Mt. Rushmore to see the evening lighting program. The ceremony was terrific, but the lighting made it impossible to get good pictures and the ride backwash a little hairy. it gets really dark out here! after dropping everything back at the Hotel, I'm relaxing with a old beer at the Mangy Moose Tavern. 478 miles for the day and 2630 for the trip overall.

Thanks for the photo clarification. I'm really enjoying your updates, as are others. Although vicariously, it's almost like we're riding along with you.
Which begs the question.
I assume your riding alone. That being the case, is it a bit, ummm, frustrating, perhaps, to see and experience everything with no one on hand to share it with?
I've considered a long distance solo trip (4 wheels rather than 2 at this stage, and mainly because my wife's vacation schedule would prohibit her participation) but never followed through because the idea of going alone sounds like a bit of a drag.
As a self employed, sole proprietor, I spend a lot of time by myself as it is, and am not averse to it. I sail single handed most of the time. It's no biggy, to me.
But I think an adventure such as this would be a lot more fun if you had somebody to share the experience.
Is that the case in your experience? Would you rather have a companion or two along with you?

I've travelled solo -- when we moved west -- we had to take two cars.
LaurieStory and I came out together -- but I went back and drove the other car once all our east coast business had been concluded.
I found it refreshing -- a good opportunity for reflection.
I'd totally do it again if the opportunity presented itself.
From the NYC area, headed to Minneapolis to visit a friend -- then south and west through Nebraska to Denver, on to Las Vegas and into Los Angeles.
Not the most scenic route -- but therapeutic nonetheless.

Day 8 7/14 left Hill City at 8:00 with a goal of getting into Iowa for the night. Took a great trip through the Badlands National Park and then swung quickly through Wall, SD for a picture of Wall Drug. Next, dreaded I-90 East, as today is a day to chew up some miles. Crossed into Central time and lost an hour. At 1:30 Central, I'm eating a quick bite in Murdo, SD. after a few water and rest breaks In the 90+ heat, I reached Minnesota about 5:40. This was always going to be a high mileage day and I ended up covering about 560 miles, ending up in Blue Earth, MN.

Steve,
I thought about riding down and meeting you but I wasn't sure of when and where you'd be in MN. I think Blue Earth is probably two hours away ay I-90 & Highway 169, but I didn't check the exact distance.

Great pics, Steve, and as mentioned, a vicarious thrill for many of us.
I dig the bike and the minimalist setup you've adopted.
No full dress, two wheeled Winnebego, for me, either.
When I did it, it was a cafe'd 750F with soft bags and as few items as we could get away with.
My buddy was riding a BMW R90S with detachable Krauser bags so he got to carry most of the camping gear.
Don't wanna be all bulked up when you hit the twisties.
Our trip took us down the East Coast to the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Pkwy. We did exceed the speed limit from time to time.
The only snag was a pretty persistant rain situation in the mountains. Camping in the wet is a drag.
I could've done without that.
Other than that, though, it was a blast.

Mike,
I'm headed south and east toward Indianapolis today, on the road in 30 minutes with 600 to cover today.
sorry, we can't meet up, would've been nice.
Peter, hotels permit a lighter approach, no camping for these old bones.

Lots of miles between yesterday and today -- getting from Mount Rushmore all the way to Indy in two days is moving. Gives a new meaning to "fly over territory."
A good place to stop for breakfast in LaCrosse, WI (right over the Mississippi River on I-90) is the LaCrosse Family Restaurant. It's basic diner food but cheap. It's our "go-to" when we're in town visiting LaurieStory's family.
And it's only two blocks or so south of I-90 at Rose Street exit 3A in Wisconsin (Hwy 53).
