in this day and age of so many boutique pickup manufacturer's, its easy to forget about reglar ole stock American Standard pups in a tele..
I got tele's with Bardens, Lace Sensors, DiMarzios', Fralin's, and Duncan's
I just got finished putting together another parts tele..(ill post pics soon in my profile)
I used a set of AS 1995 stock tele pups that came with another tele. The pups had already been swapped out with DiMarzio's so i had no idea how they sounded.
My past experience with stock Fender pups was nothing to talk about... I found them mostly to be stale, unimaginative, weak..lifeless... etc...
so i figure i'll toss em in there temporarily until i decide what to put in permanently..
Whoa!! I can't believe how good they sound...
...Dead quiet.... with all of the snap, snarl and bite you expect from a tele of yester year....
my wife even commented on how good they sounded....
I cant remember ever hearing stock tele pups sound this good...maybe part of it was the right body, neck, and set up for them to shine..who knows... if i could be critical of one thing it would be that they aren't as loud as the boutique pups...
so all i gotta do is walk over to the amp and dial it from 5 to 6..
im sure not going to complain....;-0
sometimes i guess you get lucky

It is not luck.
The Stock alnico pickups were always spectacular. It was the tone control components that sucked the tone from the pickups.

I tested a lot of pickups on my strat, I did put away my 2001 AS pickguard with original pups and circuit away when I first bought the guitar. I tested and tested, just by chance I put the pickguard on another AS and compared. I was shocked.....absolutely shocked. The original AS pickguard sounded great. It is as good as any of the more expensive pups I tested side by side.
This is no accident. People are always change happy, grass is always greener on others lawn!!!!
Don't listen to people telling you the fiber fretwork will sound better or the cloth wires are better, they don't know what they are talking about. On top, most of the other pups have vintage stagger that make the sound unbalance and sound different between strings. The only remedy is to lower the pup to help. With the plastic bobbin of the AS pups, you can push the poles up and down, adjusting to your liking and won't hurt the pup. YOu cannot do it on the ones with fiber fretwork as you might break the wires.
I adjusted the poles on my AS pup to follow the neck profile, the sound improved and I can raise them up higher to get the best sound.
