Can anyone tell me when black became a standard colour for the Clapton Strat (normal ones not the CS model)? I am pretty sure when I bought mine in 1989 you could only get red, green and pewter. But I have seen people advertise EC Strats in black with the Blackie neck signature which are supposedly from 1989. Help me out here Fender people.

Black was not offered in the original incarnation of the Clapton Strat, at Eric's request. The three original colors offered were Torino Red, Pewter, and Candy Green, in late '87 or early '88. Black was offered a couple of years later, with the "Blackie" decal on the headstock.
1989 would appear to be a little early for a Clapton Strat in Black, although it's not outside the realm of possibility. Mid 1990 is supposedly when they became available.
This information is available in the wonderful book entitled "The Dream Factory".

I think the original USA production model EC "Blackie" Strat with Lace Sensor pickups came out when the EC Strat first debuted.
I'm not sure of the date, but 1989 sounds about right.

Thanks guys. I saw this guitar advertised online and thought there was something not quite right. I hate it when you spot something like that. My instinct is always to challenge the seller or warn off prospective buyers.

How is it dated? Is there a stamp or heel marking, or are they using the serial number? Sometimes serial numbers spill over into the next year or have other funny quirks.

Don't forget that Fender used serial number decalse that started with "SE9" on the signatures for several years - even the first SRV Strats, which came out in 1992, had "SE9xxxxxx" serial numbers. Fender uses the numbers up before they reorder. It wasn't until a bit later in the 1990s that the serial number codes "caught up" with the year.
I don't remember when the black ones with the "Blackie" decal came out - I do remember that they weren't available in 1988.

That's interesting Power Trio. Did you buy it from an authorised dealer, or was it a Chinese bloke who had one in the back of his shop? Seriously though, are you sure it was 1989? Like I said, I bought mine new the same year from a Fender dealer in the UK and they had to order it from Fender UK. They only came in green, pewter and red. No other colours were available. I have also seen Fender brochures from that time which also state that only those three colours were available.

Not to cause trouble, but this is from a VERY detailed Wikipedia article entitled "Eric Clapton Stratocaster":
"the final production version (which was initially offered in Torino Red, Candy Green and Pewter, followed by Black in 1991 and Olympic White in 1994) and were Clapton's main instruments of choice for live and studio use from 1988 to 1993."

Power Trio-
Certainly sounds legit. Do you have the "Blackie" decal on the front of the headstock? Regardless, you've got a pretty rare bird. Cherish it.

That is very interesting Power Trio. I wonder if those black EC Strats were a special order for Sam Ash or regular factory runs? The mystery deepens. The great thing and problem with Strats is that you can make them yourself once you have all the parts. In fact just ask Eric Clapton about this hobby. I am always suspicious when I see a 1989 Blackie Clapton Strat because of my own experience when buying mine, but it would appear there were SOME black EC Strats on the market then.
