I've seen some Teles with Strat necks, but how about a Strat with a Tele neck...

Strats and Teles have different shaped neck pockets and heels. Strats have a rounded pocket/heel and Teles have a square pocket/heel. As you've noticed, the rounded heel fits just dandy in the square pocket, but it doesn't work the other way around without routing the body.

I've always wanted to do this, but never got around to it.

Ian Moore used to have a really cool Strat with a Tele neck.

"Mike you've even played this one ;)"

Larry, that's the one that I was thinking of when I started this thread too!

So far, it appears you've got the only one.

It didn't bother Ritchie Blackmore. I think this might be the first strat he got, purchased cheap from Eric Clapton's roadie because the neck was twisted and the intonation was out. I presume the tele neck was the replacement for the faulty strat one?

Tommy Bolin had a strat with a tele neck at one stage, and I even have a vague memory of seeing a pic of Hendrix with one.

Jimi had a Tele neck on a Strat when he played the Newport Pop Festival in '69. From what I've read, it was toward the end of a tour and he had done various damages to most of the necks of the Strats he had brought with him, and he trashed the last playable one just before Newport. Somewhere in the back of the bus there was a Tele, so one of the crew did a little surgery and transplanted the neck to get through while they fixed up or got replacements for the Strat necks.

There was a somewhat common large poster of Jimi playing at Newport where the Tele headstock was much clearer. I spent many hours getting stoned at the foot of Hendrix shrine in a friend's dorm room with that poster in the center. It was close to a life-size image of Jimi and the Tele Strat.

At Newport, Jimi played through a Fender Dual Showman driving a couple of Fender cabs loaded with 15" JBL's. He experimented with Fender and Sunn on that tour and had a Sunn endorsement for a while.

I did this project last year.

It's all Telecaster/Esquire except the body and pickguard.

reformed audiophile-

Sonically, what does that reverse slant on the pickup do as compared to the normal slant?

The short answer is 'I don't know' since I've only ever heard this pickup in this guitar in this position. I was just curious about it from seeing a few examples online.

I figured it might 'de-twang' the sound some. The pickup is a Duncan BG1400 (plenty of bottom, and it probably doesn't twang all that much, anyway). I saw several guitars with this specific pickup installed with the reverse angle, so it seemed like a good time to try it out.

What I learned is that my palm muting 'technique' isn't really compatable with this setup and I plan to change the pickup to the standard angle. After I do that, I will be in a better position to say what the difference is. The -sound- is just fine currently, quite good actually, but I think I'd be more comfortable playing with the 'standard' configuration.

When I was planning the project and nosing around the web for this topic, the comments were all over the place. I guess it's like any other 'tone' discussion - some guys think it makes a HUGE difference and others not so much.

I'll probably report back when I make the change.

nope BlondeStrat's isn't the only one! I have that same neck on a MIK Squier II Strat body with Hot Noiseless pups-total mongrel but by chance it turned out to be a match made in heaven. it's one of my most favorite guitars I have ever owned or played. sounds and plays so sweet.

putting one of those necks on a strat body is the only practical way(other than a Jim Root sig., which has a bunch of other features I didn't want...) of getting a strat with a '70's headstock, maple board, 12" radius, and jumbo frets.

I love my Frankentelestrat!

"Putting one of those necks on a Strat body is the only practical way of getting a Strat with a '70's headstock, maple board, 12" radius, and jumbo frets."

And those are the exact reasons I chose it for my build. The core guitar was a classic 70 Strat, but I wanted the 12" radius and didn't want to lose the classic 70s aspect or the maple fret board.

The neck really is a Strat neck though in every manner of fit, form and function.

Mine has DG-20 electronics in it.

yeah mine is a nice deep U shape that tapers to almost a very soft V down towards the nut. it just has a really comfortable organic ergonometry, and really sparkles and resonates beautifully tone-wise. it makes me play more, better, and more expressively.

can you tell I like this guitar?
